My 1954 triple Stringmaster has 24 new tuners. I used Grover Sta-Tite 18:1 ratio.
The modifying and soldering took a little time, but it was worth it.
For tuning-up, I really like the 18:1 for precision.

The guitar is blonde finish which is near perfect __ amazing to be that old. Two of the old gears were bad.

Jim, viewing the Stringmaster now one cannot tell it has new tuners __ the modification is so slight.
I ordered the Grover Sta-Tite 18:1 tuners from Stew-Mac, the ones for slotted peg-head.

1.With the tuner pans out of the guitar, unsolder the finger-buttons (I kept them in a small freezer bag to make sure I didn't loose any of them).
2.Remove all of the pinion gears (screws and gears into freezer bag).
3.Unsolder the tuners and brass plate which is soldered to the pan.
4.The capstan cross-shafts are now free to be removed.
5.Unsolder the finger-buttons from the new tuners (they are soft and will be destroyed from the heat).
6.Remove the gears, screws, spacers and capstan cross-shafts from the new tuners (careful not to loose the very thin spacers).
7.Cut both ends of the new tuner plates to fit.
8.I enlarged the holes of the tuner pans into which the vertical shafts fit 1/64" (negligible).
9.The new Grover capstan cross-shafts are slightly longer than the original, diameter is the same. No need to modify these, they will fit.
10.Put the new tuners back together and solder the old finger buttons back on.
11.Soldering the new tuners to the pan is an option __ I didn't.
12.Rout off 1/16" of the wood on each side of the tuner cavity. (the Grovers are slightly wider than the original tuners __ careful, control the routing).

It takes a little effort, but you'll love the new tuners.
