Hawaiian music question

I'm wondering if any of the Hawaiian music buffs here have ever seen/heard a Hawaiian fiddle player? We've been having an 11 yr. old Suzuki student sit in with our bluegrass band. She's listening to everything from Bach to Regina Carter and picks up everything we throw at her like a sponge. We do a few Hawaiian tunes to placate this old dobro player. I'd like to give her some inspiration.

There is a history of violin in Hawaiian music in the early days, and I think that there may be someone playing Hawaiian music on violin, but I'll need to think more about it. The man who wrote "Hi'ilawe", who died years ago, played violin. As far as your 11 year old, have her go for it, playing along with you on steel or with a record.

Andy Iona played fiddle, but I've only heard him play Blues.

I have a record home of a Hawaiian Banjo group, which proves that anything is possible!

Calvin Murasaki plays an a few tracks on a CD that was done by Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett called "Mo'o' olelo". He is also on a track on a CD by the group Hapa Folk called "Mai Hilahila".

There is a song written ABOUT a Hawaiian violin player called "Kanaka Waiolina" (Violin Man), written by Dennis Kamakahi, to honor the memory of Sam Li'a a famous Hawaiian musician and composer and mentor of Eddie Kamae of "The Sons Of Hawai'i". Sam died in 1975.

The Sons of Hawai'i was the group that the great steel guitar player David 'Feet" Rogers played with.

A great "Hawaiian" song for both the violin and the steel guitar would be "Maui Waltz". I have heard it played that way and it really works well. Can't find an example of that combination, but here is the song in case you want to give it a go.

Back in the 40s the local radio stations used to play a lot of the older Hawaiian music and there was quite a bit of violin in that era music !! I used to hate it cause I wanted to hear the "Hawaiian Guitar" !! I was just starting to recognize that "sound" !! There was no violin on "Hawaii Calls" !! olde geeze AKA Eddie "C"

As John noted earlier, a song with a violin being played was Hi'ilewa. It is available on iTunes ..the album in "Hapa Haole Hulas" by a group called Mango. Il try to insert a pic of the album
