Nuages on C6th

Post by Patrick Harison »

I've been lurking around here trying to learn how to play steel for the last couple of months... When I saw Doug Beaumier posted some gypsy jazz with those awesome Stephane Wrembel backing tracks, I had to try my hand at it too. I'm no steel guitar pro, but here is a halfway decent rendering of Django Rheinhardt's Nuages: http://youtu.be/TlrHEOXbxSw ... I've only been playing a couple of months, so go easy on me! What I learned from watching this video is that I've got a little bit too much arm in my forward slant, ha!

Oh yeah, just a cheap Chandler RH-2 ----> Roland Microcube (Jazz Chorus Setting + Reverb)

I'd definitely love to hear some of you seasoned guys play some of these gypsy jazz tunes... It's definitely nice having at least acoustic backing tracks to play with, more human than band in a box!

Regards,
Patrick

Hi Patrick. That's pretty cool, man, nice job!

I recorded a version a while back--I really dig the tune, but I wanted to create my own rhythm track instead of using Stephane's (I think I lowered the key 1/2 step, too).

Anyhoo, here it is: https://soundcloud.com/mdneer/nuages-arr-mike-neer

Nice job, Patrick! You're on the right track and you're getting a beautiful sound from your Chandler. I think we'll be hearing more from you in the future!

Thanks for listening Mike and Doug, you guys are both shredding HARD all the time on C6! It was oh... -40 or so with the windchill here in Minneapolis today so I had plenty of indoor time to work up a tune!

Mike, enjoyed listening to your version. Super nice chord voicings and substitutions. Wish I could get some of those on a 6 string! I also found this version of "Nuage" you played (on fretted guitar) with Bob Hoffnar on steel: http://youtu.be/iOuaUhNpRR4

At any rate, I think "Nuage" is such a great tune for steel with it's chromatic melody and ethereal texture. It's kind of reminiscent of "Sand" to my ears.

Very nice. Good playing. You get a nice, mellow tone from your Chandler thru the MicroCube.

You guys all blow me away!

Here's a live version I recorded in a restaurant a couple of years ago. I'm playing my S-8 Desert Rose (D6 with pedals), and the guitarist is Hugh Harris.

Is this song becoming a steel guitar standard? So many excellent renditions!

I always thought this tune would be sweet in B11 - it sounds so much like "Sand" intro. I heard Eddie Rivers do this live with Asleep at the Wheel - he played it in A6.

B11 would definitely give it an awesome fuller voiced rendering! This tune does have a certain magic on C6th tuning though.... In the STOCK key of G, the first chords are a ii-V from Bbm7 - Eb7. There are a lot of nifty open string voicings and runs for this progression on a standard C6 neck.

I'm enjoying listening to these different versions and am inspired by the various musical ideas!
Here's my take on Nuages, played on an A6 neck.

I do it on the 6 string Leavitt tuning which is just around the corner from C6th. Link:..
