Microsoft will end support of Windows XP on April 8, 2014, no more updates of any hacks or backdoor entry points. I'd be looking to upgrade to Win 7 or Win 8 in some flavor or version. Despite others belief to the contrary, I can assure you support will end on that date.

Aside from Ubuntu Linux, no. Ubuntu is always free for non-enterprise end users. Get it at ubuntu.com.

There are no free upgrades from Microsoft. In fact, it is highly unlikely that your computer's hardware (motherboard, chipsets, hard drive, disk drives) will even support Windows 7 or 8. If anything, it might accept a fresh install of Windows 8.0, but not 8.1.

However, there are paid upgrade options available, namely from PC Mover, which charges you a one time fee to transfer your data files, programs and settings from an XP computer to a new Windows 7 or 8 PC.

Yea, I'm looking at Ubuntu or Mint for my "online" computer. I'll have to keep an XP machine for my church projection software, and ham radio stuff.

I may, in fact, be nuts. However, I am screwed onto the right bolt... Jesus!

So which browser will be good to use in Windows 7 after
XP is gone? Opera says it will keep going after that date, and it will be OK to use XP. Hard to trust.

My computer here is Windows 7 professional, meaning opera is going into X86 and not Win 7.

Do I need to use Opera 64 bit to be safe. The reason I like Opera is it has speed dial, but I can change.

I am getting a laptop with Win 7 on it, so I need the browser for that as well.
