Spell check not always working.

Post by Richard Sinkler »

Over the past few days, the spell check in my browser (Chrome) doesn't work correctly. The word that is spelled wrong get the underline telling me it's spelled wrong. So, I put my cursor in the word, right click. The correctly spelled word shows, but when I click on it, it doesn't correct the incorrectly spelled word. This happens in the forum and facebook, and other pages too. It doesn't work maybe 7 out of 10 times. Any ideas? Just had it work once in this post, and didn't work once in this post.

Richard;
There is no simple answer, but here are some suggestions.
  • Some process is consuming most of the CPU when you are editing/composing replies. Use Task Manager to see if this is true and if so, which process is responsible.
  • Scan for viruses, spyware and bots. A spam sending/hosting bot will consume lots of CPU and RAM. Ditto for a Bitcoin mining bot.
  • Please download Firefox and see if the problem persists on the same pages.
  • Make sure Chrome is fully up to date. Go to Tools > Help > About Google Chrome.
  • Disable all add-ons and toolbars in the browsers. If the problem stops, one of them was responsible.

Chrome says it is up to date. Looking in task manager at the performance tab, it tops out at about 10% of CPU usage. Not sure if this is really an accurate representation. I use Malwarebytes (paid version) and it checks for bad stuff in real time, as does my Trend Internet Security Pro. They all say I am OK. I don't have any add-ons that I know of in Chrome, but I will double check. I know I do with Firefox, and I will check the spell check in there next.

EDIT: Works fine in Firefox.

Here are screen shots of task manager. I couldn't get a readable shot of the processes.

Checked the spell check in Firefox and Inferiornet Exploder. They both work OK. Chrome is hit or miss. I have the most current version according to Google. This morning, it worked on Facebook, and it worked on one word here on the forum. But then, it stopped working for all words I misspell on here. Ironically, I misspelled "misspell" (only put in one S) and it wouldn't fix it.
