Saw Danny at the Buffalo Chip in Cave Creek Az last night, using a Fesszy and a Steel King, sounded great to me.
He has been the house steel player for 20 years come Jan. Not many of us can make that claim.
Danny left Portland Oregon in the early 70's just as I was arriving so our paths did not cross until about 12 years ago. So glad they did.
If you are ever around the Phoenix area stop in a say howdy, he does not bite, at least not very hard.

Yep. Danny was a good player as far back in the 60s. I was playing at a club in Billings,Mt. and a good friend had me go listen to and meet him. Seems as if i remember he was playing with his family at the time. My friend who had me go listen to him was Harley Brendal another great steel player who passed on years ago.
Those were the good days. Buzz Evans was always telling me he was going to break Harleys fingers. There were some great musicians in Billings back in those days that were also fun to hang out with and exchange ideas and licks with. Tracy
BTY. A few years later Buzz was playing at a club and got off eariler than the band i was with and Buzz would come sit in on lead guitar. He had such a great sense of humor and was hot on lead guitar also.
A shame these type of days are gone.
I find him inspiring- he makes me want to play my steel more...
just like Curly, and Jaquin, and Buzz, and Reece, and Buddy....the list goes on and on, in no certain order...
Yes, Danny is indeed a great picker. I have listen to and watched many times for hours on end at the Chip. He is indeed a fine gentleman. What is really cool is he does not play the standard tuning. It boggles your mind to try and watch him and catch what he is doing. His pedals are reversed I think. But such tone and delivery with soul. This has been talked about on here before with pictures of him.
So, If you are ever in the Phoenix area drive up to Cavecreek and go to the Buffalo Chip. I think they play five nights a week. Nothing Fancy, just great country music. J.R. Rose
To my thinking, Danny is a world class player. He is original, even plays an original tuning. He has such a fine touch on the steel that he don't need a volume pedal. His sound and tone is second to none. He is also a very fine human being. Friendly to no end.
Think about the 'usual' E9th tuning. Push A & B pedals and have an 'A' chord (open).
Now think about having it tuned already to the 'A' chord and you push the A & B
pedals down to lower string 3,5,6 & 10 to the 'E' chord. This is how Danny does it!
But wait, he tunes it all down a whole-tone! So it ends up that he has a G tuning in
place of the usual E9th.
As well, he has the 'Chalker' version of C6th, with
an E on top and a low D and A in place of the low C.
Danny's definitely one of my favorites.

Hi Everybody
Big thanks to all of you, especially to Larry and his wife Pat for driving so far out of their way to say Hi.
Russ, you're right about my tuning, but I hope you'll bring your steel guitar and come back to the Chip and play. I really enjoy listening to you from out front, you sounded great!
If you haven't already checked this out watch Milo Deering do Dixie Hoedown. Great stuff.
Now there's one more: this is totally awesome. Brent and Paul playing Cherokee.
Thanks again.
all through my steel career(?) i'v heard danny's name waft by in the breeze.
in the 70's pickers around california would mention his name. i was only 20 something then. then through more travels southwest to northwest somebody else would say, 'man, ya ever hear that danny sneed pick?'
then i got to calgary and people would say...used to be a guy round here named danny sneed.
so it's been fun hearing and seeing the real person here on the forum. danny, you've lived up to your legendary mystique. and i dig that he, his style and his tuning are all unique.
i'm 65 now and he looks like a young kid to me. he's sure never growed up very far.
