Basie Ending in C6 for Lap?

Post by Nate Hofer »

Does anyone have a good way to play the Count Basie ending in standard C6 or C6/A7? I'm talking about the iconic jazz piano part — three staccato notes often found at the end of a jazz standard.

Perhaps its best with two notes in a fixed tuning (though Basie did it with three apparently.) Any other ideas or approaches?

Found an old thread here for pedals:

Here's a quick and dirty little sample I tried with just two notes in the key of A

(I updated this link with a slightly better sample of my playing now with BIAB.)

Thanks, Matthew.

Now after investigating a bit, I'm curious about any other standard jazz endings as interpreted by lap steel.

Anyone have others?

Dude, of course we noticed! I like this avatar better too. You're a serious student of non-pedal steel so the more serious pic is necessary! I always enjoy your contributions.

You got that backwards John!!!

The LAST thing I want to see is another steel player with a way too serious look on his/her face!

This is supposed to be FUN!

We all hold the Big E in the highest regards- go watch a video of him playing- always a smile...always looks like he is having FUN, he never looks like he's solving a math problem....
