Aloha International Steel Guitar Club Convention

Post by Andy Barlo »

The annual AISGC Convention is only a month away and we still have openings for playing slots for all three days. The dates for the convention are July 11, 12, 13, 2013. If you would like to perform at this event you can contact me at elkeryan@aol.com. This year's guest artist is John Ely, formerly with the Asleep at the Wheel's band. You can also hear John on our website alohainternationalsgc.org

John Ely, the special guest artist for the 2013 Winchester Aloha International Convention is an outstanding performer with a wide ranging repertoire. He blends into his program classic Hawaiian, hula, hapa haole, country, and western swing with special smoothness. He has a true Hawaiian touch and sound in his playing. He admits that his years of playing professionally in Hawaii affected his playing style. He was jokingly admonished by another professional country western steel guitarist that by going to Hawaii that he would never be the same again. I guess it was true!

The following were his programs for each day at the 2009 Joliet HSGA convention. He gave credits as he announced each song which was very educational. Read through the interesting programs. He never repeated a song which is highly unusual and outstanding.

Gerald Ross' comments on a prior convention with John Ely:

Here's John Ely (and me on guitar) at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Asssociation's (HSGA)2002 Joliet, IL convention.

John played this Fender single 8 Deluxe(Stringmaster) all weekend and got some beautiful sounds out of it.
He used a silver faced Fender Twin Reverb amp (guitar straight into amp, no effects).

Needless to say John wowed everyone in attendance. His virtuosity and total
musicality overflowed on everything he played, Hawaiian, Western Swing, Jazz.

Mahalo Andy for posting the playing schedule on the web site. I can start getting nervous now.
