Country Music Hall of Fame..... startling ommissions......

Post by Jerry Hayes R.I.P. »

I watched the Marty Stuart Show last night and their guest artist was Stonewall Jackson.... I went to the CMHOF website just now and was surprised to see that ol "wall" isn't in the HOF... How can that be when people like Bobby Braddock and others are. Also absent was the Wilburn Bros, Billy Walker and many other classic artists... Stonewall sang his butt off on the MS show and still has it for sure... How are artists selected to this thing? I'd sure like to see some of the old good 'uns like Stonewall get his due. He's been around a long time and deserves it... JMHO....JH in Va.

Jerry! This new world of Country Music Industry so call business is out to lunch. If you don't have the right amount of money to give them on the table for your career, than you are in the other History book Gay movement called nothing and they are happy to snow job you into thinking you are somebody still you can't do anything for them anymore.Who's gonna fill them shoes are gone. I'm done fighting for all the people who left me behind in Souhtern California that has no balls to stand up for what is traditional Country music that has it's own Style. Them Hall of fame are just a money making movement for those who run the table. Sad days are ahead for our music and it's Artist who are getting old and heading for Heaven or who knows maybe Hell. The Nashville music scene these days is a joke. This new music is awful and I just do not listen to it. If you have all these folks running the CMHOF no wonder guys like Stonewall, Jim Ed and others have not been inducted. It is like they hate real country music. Those guys have done it for years and are regulars on the Grand Ole Opry. I just never watch the award shows or anything in todays country scene. And I agree more musicians should be there, like Jay Dee Maness and others that have recorded for years.

Jerry Hayes -

Ya mispelled a word in the title. You wrote "Fame" when, in fact, it should be "Shame".

Yes It is a shame that all you Nashville Musicians let this happen just as it is with us out here in Southern California. I've tried my hardest to get things done from Bob Romero and his Academy Of Country Music Board head staff to do the right thing or things. But,as you know know it's all about them and the big money sweet heart deals on the dime of all the dead and left overs who can't even get in the office with out an present note of it's okay to look and come in.Sooner or later something got to give. so,please don't let up and for the real Traditional History as to how it became what it is. I am a real big part of this with many great Musicians/Songwriters,Club Owners and indie record companies and it local fan basic of folks. so,who's gonna fill those shoes? The God Father Of Southern California Country Music.

I also think that it is a crime that a lot of the folks dont get recognized while they are still alive instead of waiting for a few years after they are gone. I think it would mean a lot to someone who is pretty much retired and can't perform anymore, to be recognized and applauded while they are still breathing and can take joy from that recognition. After the "cross over" it means little or nothing other than a name on a plaque hanging on the wall.....

I think they run the HOF kind of like a popularity contest, with chart hits, record sales, and influence on the industry.
If you go by that, then of the names you mentioned Bobby Braddock wins. He's written 13 number one hits, including Country Song of the Century with "He Stopped Loving Her Today", and has had more of his songs in the top ten then all the other artist you mentioned combined.
Wilburn Brothers had a highly popular tv show, but never even had one song make it to the top of the charts. Billy Walker had a great career with some terrific honky tonk drinkin songs, but he only had one song ever make it to number 1 on the charts.
Stonewall Jackson did a little better, in his 55 years of recording and performing he's had two number 1 records.

Nashville looks at most thing through $$$, and Bobby Braddock has been $$$ to the industry. The others, not so much.

I believe and have always heard that "it all starts with a/the song". That being said, IMHO, Bobby Braddock more than deserves to be in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
I agree that there are several artist, songwriters, musicians, publishers, managers, booking agents, etc. that have been overlooked.
After all, it is the "Country Music Hall of Fame"; not the "Country Music Singers Hall of Fame".

But why put someone in that isn't all that famous? Nothing like going to a HOF ,reading plaque and asking "who the hell is that"? So I really don't care if I'm inducted or not. ;-)

Sadly most HOF's are politics. Risking being flamed, I know of one SGHOF member that politicked and had people write letters on his behalf so he could get in.

Isn't that stuff the "norm" nowadays? "Please Like Me on facebook!", "Vote for my band!", "Visit my website!". All the "begging promotion" gets old after awhile.

No! Gay -Lord did not do this. You need to dig a little deeper into the back round of Nashville's record companies big heads and it's sweet heart deals with those others wonderful people who? Serving the Industry of music business that Indie's can't even get a hand on unless you know the politic rules of give me me and I'll make you a star. I think we all went over this mess a million times already from me and it don't seem to cut in what's the truth about what I say. Good luck, but,Gaylord the cab Driver ain't the dude who did it to Traditional Country Music and it's Artist nor the one's like me who have been around since dirt. The God father Of Southern California Country Music and still going. Country music lives in the hearts of the fans. That's also where you'll find the artists who sing and play and give voice to what the fans feel. It's nice to be on a Top Ten or Top One Hundred list too,but not always necessary.

Leo The Gaylords are a big reason, not the only one tho especially in Nashville. You can blame the Fans also or the lack of them. Traditional was on deaths door a few times then Randy,Alan joined the Hag and Jones and Strait wagon and brought it back and it was cool again. I won't even get into the Garth Brooks era.George Strait kept his big venue drawing power and sales because his audience got younger. But the Loyal fans of tru-Country were dying off and staying home. The big Stars were getting older and their Fans were either older or near abouts. Instead of the big Civic centers it became small fairs ,Theatres or outdoor parks in otherwords 3000 fans would pack the places.. The Music industry for their hard line on what the DJ "Clock" play list is,is a big contributor to it's demise. I told the PD "to take his job and Shove it" once. And I played what people requested until they got tired of me tying up the sister stations phone lines.. Even had label execs on my case. The station finally dropped it's Country format a little while after they dumped me (But I was working 6-7 nights with my band)and a few of their popular DJs. and now are strickly talk and Crap. Regardless of the industry as it is now It's still whoever has the most fans, sells the most CD's fills the seats that is what dictates it's direction. Also the PR is unbeatable. The Studios can make a Frog sound like Caruso. But todays fans love noise. Its money more than talent. There are 5000 members on this Forum and even if all were traditional that is not enough determine who is right or wrong on here. If one loves whatever music all it takes is fan support to make it popular.

Right Ron. Like yourself I was in LA during some good years.62-64 I left Sacramento because it was mainly a 2-3 club town and the rest was what they called Casual nights. I often wonder what might have been if Uncle Sam didn't interrupt my music with his "Invitation". I had a 9 year gap from the music. But as I have often said Country Music did not die, They just buried it alive.
