The first bass player I saw using brushes was Lightnin' Chance on the Grand Old Opry stage in 1959. He was probably one of the best bass players in country music. I was playing bass at the time and had my dad make me a drum head attachment for my bass. I used that on my bass for quite a few years.
Lightnin' Chance also came up with what became the "Nashville numbering system". He played on a lot of Hank Williams songs, Farron Youngs' Four Walls, and some early Everly Brothers songs (pre-Claudette)
Amazing bass player!
