Nuages by Django (New recording in full)

Post by Mike Neer »

I got around to recording a full version of Nuages, though this is still in the demo stages. Not entirely pleased with the full track, but it sound pretty good and, in honor of Django, I tried to be playful with it. Don't mind the drums and bass....

This recording features the new tuning I've been working on: C6/A6.

You really caress a sweet tone out of that steel that perfectly complements those voicings.

Top four strings are C6: E C A G
Bottom four are A6: E C# A F#

BTW, I transposed the tune a 1/2 step to Gb. Was hard for me to get the G and D9 voicings I wanted, so I lowered it. That's like cheating, right?

I like some of the more dissonant voicings I can get, but this is pretty tame!

I'm going to have a full version soon. I don't want to spend my whole day in my studio--the wife will have my head!

Neat arrangement - love that tune
I had accidentally stumbled across something similar one night when I attempted to tune (6sting) from C6/A7 to A6 and just raised my C >C#, forgetting to lower the G>F#. I found it was a neat tuning with a lot of possibilities, yet I'd never heard anyone mention it. I guess that's just A7.

How's about a samba? Changed the tuning, changed the groove, changed the chords.... The steel guitar will make you crazy.

This one is real raw--only took one crack at it, not sure it's worth more than that.

Wow......that samba version really cooks. Great playing on both tunes but the samba really got me.....I guess because it's more danceable. lol

You got that right!

Cool version, Mike. I think the steel's inherent legato can sometimes work against the groove in Brazilian music. In the spirit of I'm-not-really-fit-to-carry-your-guitar-case-but I dig-your-playing, I'd love to hear some more off beat accents and less legato. Walter Wanderly was a big influence on me for samba and Bossa grooves. If you mentally remove all the cheesy, lounge-easy listening aspects of his stuff and just check out how he comps, man, could he groove!

Another interesting record is Joe Craven's Django Latino where he takes the hot club repertoire through all kinds of latin grooves and surprisingly, it sounds like this music was composed to sound that way.

Hey Andy, I agree. It was just a laboratory experiment--I just had to try it! I think this treatment would roil too many feathers.

Feather roiling is a noble calling when it comes to art! How many high-velocity yet highly-boring Django clones are running around Europe right now? There's the beginning of something really great here Mike, don't walk away too soon. As for any roiled feather responses, the great Mad artist Don Martin said it best: Pfffttt!

Not bad at all.

This was the more polished version I recorded a little while after the first before putting it to rest:
