Gibson Super 400

Post by David Nugent »

There is a 1969 Gibson 'Super 400C' listed on the Richmond, Va. Craigslist. Appears to be in very nice condition. (Not involved in the sale in any way, just thought that it may be of interest to the Jazz guitar players on the Forum.)

Nice of you to remember, Jim, and thanks, too, for the private email.

This one seems nice but my Holy Grail will be a pre-1964 Super 400. In '64 they stopped the carved backs and began using laminated wood. The tops were still carved. For all practical purposes I realise that there'd be little appreciable difference (if any!) but there's just something about Super 400s from their very best era when they were among the finest guitars built - by anyone.

In addition this one has the wrong pick-guard. It's a nice try but not standard equipment for the year. The case is right but, again, my preference would be for a brown Lifton with pink lining; they were standard up until 1962 or so.
Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!
