Using an iPhone or iPad as a remote control for ProTools

Post by Tom Wolverton »

I've heard that there are apps that use the bluetooth feature in an iPhone (and maybe other phones) or iPad to act as a remote control surface to drive certain features in ProTools. The advantage of that is you could control the transport commands, (like play, rewind, record) remotely from a mic set-up spot and not have to get up and walk over to your computer to push the record button. Anyone try this? Did you get any noise on the track from the bluetooth transmissions?

Tom,

Have not heard of such an app (although one may exist) What may be an option for you is a device by Presonus called the Faderport. You hook up to your computer via USB and configure it Pro Tools as a HUI device. It gives you Fader, transport, screen selection, punch in and other options as well.

Works great for me.

Here is the link

http://www.presonus.com/products/FaderPort

Price is around 100

V-Control is by far the best one I have found, but you'll need to have a wifi network running.

Do you find that it creates noise in your recordings?

I was afraid it would (I did not opt for a Bluetooth keyboard for that same reason) but so far I have not noticed anything. 60 hz hum is a much worse offender when recording amps by far. Especially for me... My studio is situated right under a power line
