Pedal Steel Weight Database

With light weight pedal steels being all the rage, and weight becoming a standard concern given the options available, I thought it would be nice to have a database with the actual weight of old and new guitars. No opinions please, strictly data. Brand, model, year, weight. Weight in the case might be useful too. This is actual weight, not advertised weight from a website or brochure.

There are 2 ways to weigh your guitar on a regular home scale:

1- Weigh the case with the guitar in it. Weigh the empty case. Do the math.

2- Weigh yourself. Weigh yourself holding the guitar. Do the math.

ps. I might start a similar thread for amps in the electronics section.

My 1995-ish Derby SD-10 4x5 weighs 36 lbs, 61 lbs in the case.

MSA D-10 Classic in the case 98 lbs. might as well be a 1,000 lbs. when you have 5 ruptured discs in your lower back! Ouch!

Joe. Is youre msa really 98 pounds in the case? wow, is the case an msa case? I uswd to have an msa u-12 but dont remember it that heavy. I guess thats why the wheel was invented lol.

Yes, all original (guitar & case)! This is the reason I may soon be on the hunt for a light weight S-10 3/4 something or another. I have 5 ruptured discs in my lower back and can not take my MSA anywhere to jam with other folks due to the weight. Other than that, this guitar is all original and everything works and sounds AWESOME!

I have an MSA D10. The factory case is VERY heavy. Part of the lining is peeled away, and I can see it's solid maple! Very good quality, but there's no doubt why it's so heavy.

I recently bought a case from Hatton Cases, which holds just the body. The body in that case is 50-60lbs. Much more manageable. I also bought a "tactical gun case" from Cabela's, it's a soft case which holds pedal bar, legs, rods, volume pedal, tuner, etc.

I'm quite happy with this arrangement, I know longer dread taking my guitar out of the house.

My friend had bought split cases for his 77 classic xl universal, best thing he said he has ever done. He still uses a dolly though

My D-10 LeGrande III with 9 pedals, 8 knees and wood necks:

Legs, rods and pedal board 12 lbs.
Thomas Case 20.2
Guitar Body 33.4
Total 65.6 lbs.

Never buy a guitar too heavy for your wife to carry!

My Zum S12U weighs 38.2 lbs. outside the case. My 1978 Sierra S12U weighs 52.4 lbs. Both sound wonderful but the Zum gets to travel more than the Sierra ;~)

I carry the Sierra in two cases. The pedal rack and rods plus the two rear legs go in a separate gun case. The rest of the guitar is still heavier, in it's case (20 lbs.), than the whole Zum guitar. The Sierra's pedal rack alone weighs about 9 lbs. Sierras are built like a tank. The weight the only drawback--it's a great guitar otherwise.

The Zum rides in a customized keyboard case (lighter than the hard case). I've learned to travel light, I play thru a Roland Cube 80--about 35 lbs.

I've taken the info I can easily find from this thread and similar ones, as well as some "for sale" ads, and put it into a table for easy reference. I have only dealt with guitar weights, not "in case" weight - I understand why a purchaser of a particular used instrument might inquire about the latter, but the relevant data is the guitar weight.

If the source field is blank, then it came from this thread (or I forgot to enter it!). Feel free to add more weights, and I will try to update the list occasionally. And I will start with a quote from Bobbe Seymour from a discussion a number of years ago:

“We have to weigh these guitars everyday for shipping and never ever see correct weights listed here on the forum. I've seen weights listed here on the forum vary thirty pounds for the same guitars. Maybe gravity is different in different parts of the united states.”
