Let's welcome CMA nominee "Snoop Dog"...

Post by Greg Stasny »

:P That's right, among other embarrassments to "country" music is "Music Event" nominee Snoop Dog, who collaborated with Willie for some song I guess was played somewhere.... :\
And "Big and Rich" is back, for something...

But at least Paul Franklin is nominated in the musician category!

Even George Strait wonders "where do I fit in this mess?" (see article)

Shame on CMT and the music executives. I don't like it. What really boogers me off is that there is so much good, good country music that don't get airplay on mainstream radio. And I wish Willie would dump Snoop Dog.

I liked it. Great pickin', song kind of cutesy, but I like the way Snoop sings his verse. Bunch of real country pickin.

Tough crowd, but I guess that's to be expected here.

A friend of mine played me the whole record for the first time last weekend. Tons of really nice steel guitar, and I thought the record sounded very good, overall.

On Snoop - did you even listen to the tune or is this just a kneejerk reaction to his mainstream persona? What he did on this tune sounded OK to me - frankly, a lot better than what I heard from Kris K. OK, that's admittedly not a high bar (which doesn't bother me either), but I appreciate when people try to get outside of their usual box.

The end of the link in Greg's original post:
... But the passage of time often puts the music in a different context. Buck Owens was once taken to task for rocking too much. Waylon Jennings' outlaw sound was considered daring and progressive. Ronnie Milsap's music was sometimes branded as outside of the box. All of those artists are generally regarded as traditional acts in 2012. So it's a sure bet that some of the music that's currently testing country's boundaries will one day be considered oldschool, and safely traditional.

"I can distinctly remember somebody calling me when I played Alabama's'My Home's in Alabama' in 1980 or '81," KVOO's Poteet says. "They said, 'Get that s%$# off the radio. It ain't country.' It's the same cycle over and over again."
And I don't need to be reminded that Snoop is not and will never be Buck or Waylon. But I think we could cut Willie a little slack. :)

Personally I feel that when you introduce known gangster/thugs into the country genre it pretty much reduces it down lower than it has already seemingly sunk and in my opinion that is pretty low.

Sitting here watching this so called "country music award" show we find ourselves muting it and listening to Pandora more than anything else. Personally I truly believe this should simply be called "Popular Music Awards" or something of the sort. I am only 43 and I don't know who half of these people are, my 15 y/o son walks in the room and says "these people aren't country", that's so and so. LOL Oh well...
Been at this damn thing for a few years now. Not so sure that I'm getting anywhere but it is fun. Sometimes.

Willie has written some of the GREATEST classic songs of all time.BUT other than that he is just another old braindead pothead,Can't sing on key or in meter, one of the worst guitar players in the business,Never understood why so many thinks he is God's gift to music, and condons his ignore the law lifestyle,I remember when he first started getting attention even back then his most loyal fans were stoned out of their gourds most of the time, seems that's still true today. And to even associate with thugs like Snoop or Snoop's peers such as 50 cent,Bad Azz,C murder,Thugg Lordz, and other assorted thugs just lowers him further down in the CESSPOOL OK all you Willie disciples let me have it,BUT YOU WON'T CHANGE MY MIND,WILLIE NELSON STILL SUCKS. YOU BETCHA,DYK?BC.

When I first turned it on I thought I was listening to Led Zepplin or Three Dog Night backing some singers "labeled" as country singers. Some really blazing lead guitar that reminded me of some of the acid rock back in the 60's and early 70's.

Here's the tune, as Barry posted above:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnOQIKKBrJA

Are you really gonna tell me this sounds anything like Zeppelin or any 'acid rock band' with 'blazing lead guitars'? Are you serious? Really?

To me, this sounds like lots of stuff Willie has done over the last 40 years. Listen to the rest of the record - tons of great pedal steel by Mike Johnson and Greg Leisz. Here's one with Ray Price - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9658ARot8k

Honestly, I'm not trying to tell you to like or dislike anything. But IMO, the mere mention of Snoop Dog is what has elicited this response, nothing to do with the music. My opinion.

FWIW, I haven't watched an awards show of any type in probably 40 years, don't care about 'em, never will. I decide what I like for myself, don't need anybody else to tell me. But I still think that this is more about culture wars than anything about music.

Well I'm sure someone will chime in here in a minute and defend this crap. It never seems to fail....as far as I'm concerned its indefensible.....take it for what it's worth.

Snoop intentionally created his public persona and he deserves what he gets as far as I'm concerned, be it fame and fortune, or a lot of criticism depending on the demographic doing the judging. I think guys like Willie and/or Snoop sometimes do things for no other reason except that they can. That's fine, it's a free country, but it doesn't work for me. Willie has fallen from grace, Snoop never had any.

When was Country Music never influence by pop music? What 150 years ago maybe!!
Why are people still shocked by this when it has been going on longer than ANY of you have been on this earth??

Now think back to the last time you saw a Country Music Award show that did NOT have some major pop artist on, either singing, presenting, or even accepting an award? The answer is NEVER!

I wasn't speaking of Snoop Dog. I guess I should have read the title of the post. I was speaking of the music in general on the show.

A CMA show with a pop/rock star present did happen over the years (sorta 90% country/10% rock); now it's a CMA show with 90% rock/pop, with 10% country (if you're lucky). There is a difference....

Country music, like many other genres, is in a state of emergency now. Due to the fact that 90% of people under the age of 30 steal their music on the internet, commercial music execs are scrambling to do anything they can to make a buck. Everyone's scared in that business now. I'd never wish this business on my worst enemy. A recording career has never been a worse prospect than it is now. It's more dog-eat-dog than ever, and this hybridization of genres is just an indication of the mess that it's in. I find it hard to believe that some of these collaborations are born of true artistic endeavour. It stinks of management/record label greed and desperation.

I like to think of myself as open-minded when it comes to musical genres, but sorry I fail to see anything of musical merit in Snoop-Dogg.

I watched a part of an old episode of Roy Rogers the other day, and I was taken by how just decent the plot was. It hit on many of the values I grew up on and still hold true, and was I wrong? I believe not. So if something becomes popular or unpopular that does not determine the correctness.
I think Marty Stewart sums it up best when he talks about driving through rural America and how the music played today does not match what he sees through the windshield. So what the marketing media presents does not make it right, keep true to your beliefs and eventually we will reach equilibrium, it will never return to the way it was, but it will change.
Roy Rogers is corny too many, but if you listen to the message in the program, it has withstood the test of time. So will Country Music. Just my thoughts.
