Location of Geo. Jones Possum Holler Club

Post by robert kramer »

Can anyone answer this question? Thanks in advance for any info:

"I gather that around 1975, G. Jones reopened his Possum Holler Club at a new location, in Printer’s Alley. Do any of you know anything about the previous location of the club? I’ve heard it was on Broadway, but haven’t been able to confirm that. Thanks."

If memory serves, it was on lower Broadway. At least it was in....70 or 71?..... then moved to printers Alley and I think that Kenny Rogers purchased it in 1979.

Hi Robert. "Long Time Since meeting You at Wayne Dahls
Apartment" I was at Possom Holler on Lower Broadway.
It was next to Roy Acuffs & on the second floor & across from ETs record shop! Regards! Al Udeen

Thanks, Al...I remember seeing a faded, painted sign for Possum Holler in the alley between the back of Sho-Bud and the Ryman. This was 1979-83.

By then, Possum Holler had moved. But the faded sign was still there.

If Memory serves me right it was off of Broadway not on it, I'd say second or third Ave..I believe Webb Pierce opened it first as something then George, even Faron had a time owning it...I don't believe it ever was in printers alley But heck were talking seventies here..

I found a website that says it was here, but I don't know. Can anyone verify?

"The Possum Hollow Nightclub in Nashville TN was located On 321 just south of the Highway 5 by-pass, on the north side."

Gene O'neil should know. Here's a picture of him playing there with GJ.

My father, Shug Baggott, opened the second Possum Holler in March of 1975 "on the corner of Commerce and Printer's Alley". Which is the one in the picture shown in this thread. I created a page for it on Facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/WorldFamousPossumHoller

The first Possum Holler was, according to George Jones's autobiography (though I'm certainly not trying to suggest everything in that book is correct), "on Nashville's legendary lower Broadway Street... across the street from the Ernest Tubb Record Shop, next door to the world-famous Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, across the alley from the Ryman Auditorium".
