Pedal Steel Song Without Any Backing/Band

Post by Kenneth Kotsay »

I listen to Buddy Emmon's, WILD MOUTAIN THEME today and to my ears he's the only instrument that is playing, there could be a base behind his playing but I can't hear it.

Any other songs where the Steel is playing solo, no band backing?

OPPS, made a spelling mistake in my post, base should be BASS.

Not only I could use a hearing a ear aid I guess I need a new pair of glasses also. This getting old stuff is for the pitts, what else happens as you approach 65.

Kenneth, forum member Albert Svendall has a gospel CD with just him playing steel. The CD title escapes my memory, but it is very pretty music.IMHO.

Bill Stafford's "Going Home" CD is a fine solo recording. I try to agitate for more steel - less clutter - on steel guitar albums, to no avail. I can't hear half of what Doug Jernigan plays because of the pianos and fiddles and guitars, but most steel guitarists tend to fill up their CD's with bass solos and fiddlers and guitars galore. And then they complain about the cost of hiring all the noisemakers. Or worse yet, use the simulations... Bobby Black's CD should come with a warning label, it's unlistenable to me because of all the Band-in-a-Box type filler.

Curly Chalker recorded 3 songs without backing (that I know of):

"You Don't Know Me" - Big Hits on Big Steel (Columbia 9336) & Counterpoint (Steel Guitar Club #12)

"If" - Counterpoint (Steel Guitar Club #12)

"Danny Boy" - Curly Chalker in Concert 1986 DVD (M. Perlowin/M Brebes)

Try playing Emmons' arrangement of "Wild Mountain Thyme" direct from of your volume pedal straight into your recorder. I'm no expert but I think that's how Emmons got that sound on that cut.

Here also is another example of solo steel guitar that belongs right up there with the steel players mentioned above:

Hal Rugg put a cut of him playing "Life's Railway To Heaven" on his "Steels Of The Grand Old Opry" Album released in 1975. The effect is very nice although He's not entirely alone.

He and Sonny Burnett and Weldon Myric cut this Album when they were all 3 Staff players at the Opry. I took the tune off the LP and uploaded it to Sound Cloud for anyone who would like to hear it.
