"Hip Hop in a honky tonk"
I just did a couple dates with Kevin Fowler subbing for the mighty Arty Passes. It was a ball ! This song sorta sums things up as far as certain parts of the night go:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymy3bfC0i_U
After you experience a couple hundred astonishingly beautiful women on the bar and tables in hot pants and cowboy boots dancing along to this stuff it just doesn't seem so bad anymore.

It's just a party song about a guy who hates hip hop and loves real country but found himself having fun anyway. It is pretty clever and self aware.
I have been bumping into some amazing live music scenes playing regional gigs around TX, LA OK and on up into Colorado. Big country music clubs packed with young people dancing and doing whatever it is they do. The music is not traditional country but that music pretty much peaked over 40 years ago. That is a solid 2 generations. It would be weird to have kids be into the same music there grandmother is into when they want to go out drinking and getting into trouble.
If I just heard that tune on youtube I would have passed it right over. But being in the environment that the song is about made the song resonate. I'm not going to listen to any Colt Ford on purpose but I'm glad I got to enjoy that world from the stage with an awesome band.

David,
Sounds like a fun gig ! There is this other guy named Rench I used to record for that does some great hybrid country music also. I seem to run into the steel in all sorts of genres. I like it best when it is used as an actual musical instrument rather than just a gimmick to make something sound "country".

Thanks for filling in, Bob - hope they remember me this weekend!
I have to admit the first time we heard that song we groaned, but you nailed it pretty well. It is kind of clever and does grow on you, and that solo is fun to play.
If you don't think anything but old timey country (whatever that means to you) is the only real music, then I could see where you might have a problem. We play country with a rock and roll attitude and make no apologies.
We've played some shows with Colt - believe me, he knows what he's doing, and they're all first class guys and great players. BTW, he's a former professional golfer!
Great to finally meet you Chris - sorry I couldn't stay up late enough for the party!
I can't keep up with you kids!

Cool stuff David! Country's been kept alive throughout the generations by evolving and blending, ever since Bob Wills blended it with Swing, Ray Price blended it with Easy Listening, the Byrds did it with Rock and Roll and Willie with just about everything. And each speaks to its own generation, so this makes perfect sense. Country ain't dead, and this is why.

There are hundreds of steel players out there playing the new stuff, having a ball and making a living. Those regional and country music for young people gigs really can be fun. The little bit that I have experienced over the last few years with a pile of different bands
(Fowler, Bart Crow, Derailiers and a bunch of other that I can't remember the names of at the moment) has been a real eye opener.
Arty, Thanks again for the work. You have a great thing going.

Bob......I always enjoyed (and miss those days) of showing up at all different kinds of venues (NY/Brooklyn) to see you playing with a variety of groups in a variety of genres.....from The Deadstring Brothers to Mood Illusion w Samoa to that fusion band at The Norwegan Seaman's Church, Barbes, Lillie's, The PSGA, etc......I didn't always "get" the music, but I sure enjoyed experiencing it live......and I'll say one thing.......whatever any group/musicians/madmen threw at you.....you always caught it & threw it back.....

"Hip honk" . LOL.
Good one.
When I lived in the east village I was always dropping into clubs that had a variety of music playing. One night I walked into a bar and heard two hip hop guys playing to prerecorded beats.
I'll say this: it was great fun and I have NEVER seen two guys take over an audience like these guys did. Incredible audience interaction.
