I always liked Sam Cooke! He had a uniquely beautiful and expressive voice that always seemed to fit the song, whether it was rock, soul, gospel, or blues. He had a ton of hits, but his life was tragically cut short in a shooting.

Sad ending for such a talented singer, but he left a staggering legacy of music, nonetheless.

Soul singer Bobby Womack married his widow, only a few weeks later after the accident.

If you like Sam Cooke's pop records and have never heard his gospel work may I recommend either of these. I think his gospel recordings eclipse almost everything he recorded in his later pop career. I don't think it's a stretch to say he was one of the most influential vocalists in the history of pop and probably the single most influential vocalist in R&B history.

I've always been a Sam Cooke fan. "Bring It On Home to Me" has always been one of my all-time faves (if you listen closely you can hear Lou Rawls singing harmony)
