David Letterman tonight!

Post by Jon Graboff »

Hey forumites, I'll be on "Late Night with David Letterman" tonight, Wednesday the 23rd with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. We were thinking of playing "A Way To Survive" (which we do know how to play) but decided to perform Ryan and the bands' new single "Let It Ride" instead. Tune in! Jon

Very cool. Must be a nice gig. Ryan seems like a nice chap. Chatted with him a few years back in State College PA. Are you playing steel? If so are you replacing Cindy?

Hey Jon, do you have some kind of time machine we don't know about?

It would be a neat trick indeed to post a notice to the Forum on May 25 and then be able to go back to May 23 for the gig...

Ryan, yes I've replaced Cindy in the Cardinals. Scheduling conflicts, etc. I'll be copping many delightful "Cindy moments" from the new Ryan Adams and the Cardinals CD "Cold Roses" and adding a few things of my own. I'm on Ryans' next CD due out in August where I only have to remember my own stuff! Jon

Mark, there was some scheduling confusion at first but Dave likes to take long weekends so he tape two shows on some days. We taped the performance on the 23rd but it's airing tonight, the 25th. I think I listed conflicting dates in various places. Sorry for any mix up. Jon

Unlike Rick Schmidt's appearance on Carson Daly with Scott Weiland last week that I thought I had recorded only to discover a Bow Flex infomercial and a fascinating infomercial by Dr. Nick Riviera for some eyeball whitener---hey Rick, was that you?--on my vcr--I have just very carefully programmed the damned machine to get it right this time. See you then.

Geez, I'm glad I posted this thing AFTER taping the show knowing that all these heavy hitters are gonna be watching. It's hard enough in that studio. Dave likes it at (I'm not kidding) 47 degrees! I had condensation on my tone bar and it was slipping around in my sweaty hand. Jon

John, that's great news. You've brought back memories for me, since as a CBS Engineer for 28 years I had occasion to work on the Late Show doing Audio (RF Mics). When I entered the control room most of the crew knew me from other shows, the production supervisor went out of his way to intorduce me to the rest of the group informing them that I also played one hell of a pedal steel guitar. That made my day.

I could have told you to wear long john's had I known you were going to be in the Ed Sullivan Theater. When Jr. Knight played the show backing Lee Ann Rymes I warned him in advance about the cool conditions, same with Robby Turner when he did it. BTW, Kevin Rogers is the audio mavin, so I know the mix will be top notch.
I'll be watching.

I caught the show tonight, thanks for the heads up. I thought it was pretty cool, I didn't know you were freezing in there. Image I think Letterman likes steel guitar. Sorry they went to commercial as soon as the song ended, before he talked to anyone.

Great gig, Jon! How was it setting up right next to the drummer? Do you always do that or was it just for this gig?

Dang, I missed it. My kids were watching Leno instead. I did get to see Nelly perform. It was three dudes rapping while grabbing their crotch in unison. Totally blew me away!

I don't mean to be a bummer .But I couldn't really hear the steel in the mix.

I heard both guitars loud and clear but the steel was buried.I could see him playing but I didn't hear any steel.I turned up my TV and it was the same.
Maybe one of my speakers is f'ed up. Was this just me? anybody else notice this?

I caught a live show a couple of weeks ago and you could hear Jon and he sounded great.

David, it's not just you and your TV. I was buried in the mix. That aside, I think we did an ok job, I'm gettin' paid and no lives were lost. Jon

I did not realize the steel was so buried, I thought it was all the chorus on the guitars that made it hard to hear. Reason I think Letterman likes steel, once Emmylou Harris was on,and Dave was interested that the steeler had an antique lap from 1926, but when he tried to talk about it, Emmylou blew him off with a joke.

Hey Jon,
Great job, man. You looked terrific, we're all proud of you. I only wish I heard more of you, instead of so much guitar. Maybe next time.
Sincerely,
John D.

I have to concur, too. The steel was definitely very low in the mix. All I really heard were the guitars.

Lead singer might have looked up at the audience, too, now and then. Never hurts.

I liked the song and the overall sound.

Also, on the plus side, Jon, you were on TV and I wasn't. Good luck down the line.
