That's pretty old, Sonar is up to X1 version now (which superseded 8.5). I have a home studio using Sonar X1 Producer (and working on learning Pro Tools).

You could find a newer version on eBay cheap. I just saw Sonar 5 Producer edition for $20. Didn't look very long but I'm sure there are even better deals.

I have both sonar 5 and 6 and Pro Audio 9.
Pro Audio is what, 10 years or more older, but I still like
to use it. It's just simpler. Works for me and what I do.

Yep. It still does what it did then. But there's "more better" stuff now.

If you are the registered owner of Sonar 3, the upgrade to X1 Producer is $199. I have every iteration of Sonar from 2XL thru X1C Producer Expanded. There are some very nice VST effects and instruments that you would aquire.

As a loyal Cake user for many years I don't suggest buying older used versions off ebay. It is illegal to sell your older Sonar versions. Every registered owner signs a agreement not to resale.

There are several authorized Cakewalk dealers selling older and new versions both on EBAY and online. Here is a link to the authorized dealers. http://www.cakewalk.com/Dealers/online.aspx

I just opened my studio and use the Sonar X2 Producer
Wow there's a lot of cool stuff on there.
I record through an analog console and it all ends up in Sonar.
