Live steel in Huntington Beach, CA 3/20/05

Post by John McClung »

I'm sitting in playing pedal steel and doing a bit of singing with great musician friends of mine, the Snake Oil Willy Band, this Sunday at Martini Blues in Huntington Beach.

The gig is a performing tribute to their recently deceased lead singer, the great J.D. (John) Hamm, who died very suddenly just weeks ago.

Please come enjoy some great old-school country music, and have a drink with me in honor of a great guy and talented singer who will be sorely missed in the LA and OC country music scene.

Sincerely,
John McClung/Mr. Twang
Mullen D-12/Profex II/Webb Amp

Rain or shine, you LA/OC cats come on out for real honky tonk music and pretty real steel guitar styling! I just changed strings, both necks of the D-12 beast, my first sets of Herby Wallace Jagwires, come help me assess how they sound.

Hey John, I lived on 11th street in Huntington Beach (about 3 blocks from the beach) for ten years from 1956 until 1966. That was bedfore they clobbered the beach area up with condos. At that time I don't think there was a steel guitar in all of Orange County. Wish I could be there to hear you guys.

Hey John, kick 'em in the butt in my old stomping grounds! I picked at the old Swizzle Stik at Brookhurst and Garfield for about 3 years with three different bands. I had a lot of fun both in the club and the parking lot....HB rules!...JH in Va.

We just came back from listening to a couple of sets, and it was really nice hearing John play his D-12 Mullen. He's got his own style as well as expertise, and he really gets into it, wholly. Good music, thanks!

As usual "Mr. Twang" did a very fine job on his new double 12 Mullen which sounded fabulous on his vintage Webb amp. Very nice treat for a Sunday afternoon.

Cheers,

Jim and Billy, thanks for stopping in and bring your family and friends, glad you had a good time. See you Zum buddies at the Perl-Jam.

Jerry, I too had a ton of fun, when I played the Swizzle Stick, it was with one of my favorite guitarists, Darryl Brooks. This was my last full time gig before returning to finish my graphic design degree at Cal State Long Beach. Ah, the good ol' days! I'm still in touch with Darryl, he's in Memphis but due to return to LA any day now, I plan to start an old school country band with him.

I remember you playing at DJ Ranch, was that its name back then? Clarke Rohn played with you, or separately, can't quite recall.
