Old Don Gibson clip

Post by Jerry Overstreet »

I saw this a couple nights ago during PBS fundraiser program about the Opry. I thought this guitar break at about 1:13 might be Spider Wilson. Some comments underneath this video seem to suggest that also.

Anyhow, I was impressed with the solo...don't hear that sound and style of guitar playing in country music much anymore. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZkzs9hQg8Q

It is, in fact, Spider Wilson and he still plays like that. So does Jimmy Capps and Leon Rhodes. You can hear that kind of playing when they're on Opry spots on WSM radio.

Spider Wilson has had a long and successful career in music. He was one of the guitar players in Jimmy Dicken's band when Buddy came into the band around 1955. Did you see Jerry Byrd on Rhythmn guitar?. Jody.

Yes, I've been to the Opry many times and have seen all those mentioned. It's usually Leon or Capps with the solos whenever I've seen them. I can't say I've ever heard much of Spider's lead work. He seemed to be doing a lot of rhythm work when I've seen him. I guess it's just the way it worked out when I was there.

So yes, you can still hear and see that jazzy, big guitar style of picking at times.

Those guys, Harold Bradley and a few others.

No, didn't notice Jerry, I was focused on Spider I guess. I've seen JB on several of the old cuts though. I'll have to watch it again.

Too bad they didn't let him play this solo on the record! I also see Walter Haines playing steel over on the opposite side of Jerry Byrd. You can hear him doing harmonics.

such sacrilege!!!!....thats chet atkins on the original...lol!!

spider played a little of atkins solo and then a few od his own fancy licks..

i saw spider on the opry in 1969. i never heard anything live like the sound that came from that stage since then. the sound of the band and the vocals in that room was just stunning.

George Jones has a version of this tune, with a similar solo to what Spider plays, starts out like the record, then gets jazzy. Jones's is from the '60s I think.

In case you are interested, Mitch Drumm posted the complete list of Don Gibson sessions that used Johnny Smith here. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopi ... don+gibson Notice that Chet produced Oh Lonesome Me but isn't credited as playing. I thought Smith played that solo on the original record.

Sorry to drift.....

Personnel

Don Gibson – vocals, guitar
Hank Garland – guitar
Chet Atkins – guitar
Harold Bradley – guitar
Bob Moore – bass
Buddy Harman – drums
Floyd Cramer – piano
The Anita Kerr Singers (Anita Kerr, Dottie Dillard, Louis Nunley, Bill Wright) – background vocals

gibson and garland would have played archtop rhythm
bradley would be on tic tac elec bass and atkins on elec. you can tell its him playing from the sound of the guitar and the fills he plays. the solo is a dead giveaway. he plays the same motif on his own cover of this song.
