Los Straightjackets - My Heart Will Go On

Post by Andy Volk »

This song is sooo much better as a surf instrumental than a four-kleenex, Celine Dion weeper!

Gotta be kind of hot playing gigs in those Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling masks.

The Dion version induced something other than uncontrollable weeping for me, so I substituted a paper bag for the kleenex.

Love Los Straitjackets!

Los Straitjackets rock. They can take pretty much any tune with any type of reasonable melody and work it up into something cool.

My old surf-rockabilly band was opening up for them some years ago and they had a whole room full of hardcore punk/rockabilly kids absolutely swaying to the theme from the movie "A Summer Place". Like this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSusBkefLD0 - of course, it's a great tune anyway, but these guys can make the translation to an audience that expects it to rock.

Thy also do a great cover of the theme from Midnight Cowboy (first played by the great Toots Thielmans on harmonica in the movie).

Give them an "A" for taste in selecting such a pretty tune. And another "A" for the Surfaris-level musical interpretation.
