Beginner Help-Examples of songs with Aug/Dim chords

Post by Keenan Friday »

Need help in distinguishing augmented and diminished chords in songs. Good references to songs with aug/dim chords and where they are located (whether in chorus/verse, ect) :)

I understand how to make these chords, but need examples of where they are used in songs. Examples of songs.

I assume they might be used as transitions between chords??

Towards the end of the song "On The Alamo" there is about a four bar passage in a diminish chord.

An old Pop Song called "Moonlight on the Ganges" it's first passage is about a three bar Augmented chord going chromatically down the scale.

Mostly these chords are used as passing chords.

When playing the song "Crazy", before starting to play another verse, an Augmented chord is used as a lead in.

If you're familiar with the Nashville Numbering System...
for example
key of G

G A B C D E F# G
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1

you could use an augmented or diminished chord to get from the 1 chord (G) to a 4 chord (C)

1(G) - 3dim(Bdim) - 4(C) or...
1(G) - 1aug(Gaug) - 4 (C)

or from a 5 chord (D) back to a 1 chord (G)
5 (D) - 7dim(F#dim) - 1(G)
5 (D) - 5aug(Daug) - 1 (G)

you could also use the dim to go from the 1 chord (G) to a 5 chord (D)
1 (G)- 7dim (F#dim) - 5 (D)
