This YouTube thing might turn out OK, after all... Scofield peaks his solo beautifully, but the highlight for me is how Joey DeFrancesco spits both Martino's and Scofield's highlights back at them at the end of his solo. People can still play, whew.

Its amazing that Pat had to completely relearn everything and again has reached a level of near perfection.......For my money I love Scofield's ability to flow freely on the upper extensions of the chords and his choice to avoid scale patterns.

Here's another version of the tune in a completely different direction....Thought you all might enjoy this version.

Boy that is so true! I have always thought and loved Mike Stern and his way of playing lines but Scofield always amazed me as he played more across the fretboard with very tasty and choice notes!

I love Mike Stern's CD "Play" as you can hear their interaction. Great topic!

John Scofield is probably my favorite guitarist of all time, followed by Pat Metheny and Pat Martino (and Wes, of course). I was lucky enough to get some lessons from Mike Stern.

I probably have just about every record Sco has ever played on, but I highly recommend the record Flat Out if you can get it. His versions of Secret Love and All The Things You are are "flat out" incredible. For Pat Martino, Joyous Lake is the one that really got me, but his Live! record from 1973 is amazing.

I first saw Scofield with Mike Stern in Miles Davis' 1983 band - in Austin no less, there were a couple of guitar players there... some people didn't like 'em, I did. I've thought that Scofield is now having the time of his life when he hooks up with Medeski, Martin & Woods - he gets to play guitar-hero rock star, and he loves it. There's a pile (28 ) of high-grade concert recordings on sugarmegs.org of that configuration, as well as 50 or so of the later Miles.

Miles lets the guitarists beat each other's brain out, the steps up and plays the one perfect note in "Star People":
