Here is what i am going to do if anyone is INTERESTED I will make a video and feature every steel guitar that anyone wants to bring to this video shoot and i will play any guitar you bring with 2 cords one volume pedal and one amp same song and we can compile all these on video for anyone one to view what guitar's they like in tone quality and tone peformance old verse's new / new verse's new formica verse's wood ect any combination is welcome you can even bring and old bigsby if you have one .

Anyone who like to participate with a steel weather and individual or any other steel guitar maker's i welcome everyone who like to participate in this .
this could be an exciting way to display ever aspect of STEEL GUITAR TONE for everyone no matter if your a pro or just play a steel guitar at home for your own enjoyment ..................

If you really want to compare the different steels, you should use the same volume pedal, cords, and amp.

I did mention 1 volume pedal 2 cords n same amp same gear for every guitar tested no changes of volume pedals cords or amps period through the whole ordeal it is going to be a fair comparison ....

I think this is the best idea I have heard yet for a comparison. I really hope you get to pull this one off.
Even with the video I would still like to read about your impressions of playing action and feel, etc., for each individual guitar. If I wasn't in southern Florida I would probably take part!

Cool idea. I like the way this guy did a video comparison, in the case a Les Paul vs. a Strat in the same video. Obviously, we will not need distortion for the steel compare!

I would like to see this done. I stated on a thread awhie back that all steels don't sound the same.I was shot down by other steel players that it's all in the hands.I said then and I say now that don't don't make any sense to me.Like I said before why not just get any steel if it's all in the hands.I'm not saying one sounds better than the other just different.I would sure take you up on this if I lived closer. Barry Blackwood - get a set of those little earbud headphones and plug them into your computer. You will be pleasantly surprised at the sound.

well there are no variables going to happen with the same amp same 2 cords and a volume pedal and my right hand picking the strings i am aggressive player i will pull it off and make it all happen trust me

Unless all the guitars have the same pickups too, it seems kind of pointless to do this. Rusty has already made the case elsewhere of how important the pickups are to the sound, right?

jim i am just going to show the difference in sound and tone it don't matter what you bring its a simple test period if u think your pickup sounds great well we will put the guitar through the test !
let everyone else decide what they like or don't like

It seems to me that to really compare the steels you need to record each steel twice.

First with what I would call the default amp, with the default setting (same amp and setting for every steel). That way we can hear the raw difference between the steels. Use your favorite amp and settings and don't touch the knobs!!

Then record each steel using whatever amp and amp setting you feel gives the best overall tone for that particular steel. The second recording should show the steel at its best. But no special effects, other than reverb (set as close to the default level as you can get). Also, volume needs to be as close as possible to the default setting.

Might be a bit more work for you, but it would help reduce arguments that brand __ steel didn't get a fair chance due to the test method.
