Coinciding with recent discussions about a certain southern town, this Times article on Arvo Part: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/magaz ... -t.html?hp
If you want to know suffering for your art...This will perhaps put recent discussions in perspective.
I remember when I first heard Arvo Part: the mid to late 80's. I went to a summer series of new music at Lincoln Center. Part was the opening piece to Reich's Music for 18 musicians. They played Tabla Rasa and I was transported to a different place. I've been in love with Part ever since.

Yep, I remember when I first heard Arvo Part on a college radio station. It was PASSIO. Blew me away. His most recent pieces seem to have moved away from his earlier aesthetic, but there are enough solid releases on ECM to last many years. The other music I heard back then that forever changed my view of choral music was Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, which Susan has covered (bravo!).
So much amazing music in the world; would that it were more ubiquitous!
