RIP Solomon Burke, the king of rock'n'soul

Post by Steinar Gregertsen »

His concert at a local festival over here in '08 must be one of the best shows I've ever been to. Never seen so many smiling faces after a show...

Solomon Burke dies at Amsterdam airport at 70

Damn, what a colorful man and an incredible voice. Read Peter Guralnick's book Sweet Soul Music for an idea of what Solomon was like as a man.

Joe Henry recorded a great record with Solomon about 5 years ago, Don't Give Up On Me, and he did another record called Nashville more recently.

Some people seem like they are going to live forever...

i know he felt slightly slighted that he wasn't given the same kind of adulation as other soul luminaries during his life

but with 21 children, 90 grand children and 19 great grand children all by the age of 70 he may have won richard dawkin's selfish gene lottery

a great record btw

By the way, if you dig soul music, Derek's is an AMAZING resource. You can get on his list and get a daily .mp3 of a long-lost or under-appreciated 45. If you love it, save it. If not, delete. I'm learned about SO many artists from these daily emails. Not the best audio quality but good enough.
