Win a Free CD! Solve the Steel Guitar Crossword!
With the very able programming assistance of Rob Hamilton, I have now added a new feature to my website: a monthly Steel Guitar Crossword competition. For those of you who enjoy tackling crosswords, this can be a fun way to win a new CD for your collection (or you can choose one of my tablature sets instead, if you're the winner).
Simply go to my website at www.jimcohen.com and click the link at the top of the page, which will take you to the Crossword puzzle page. The puzzle runs right on the screen; simply type the letters into the spaces and hit the Tab button to move to the next word. Many (though not all) of the words in the puzzle are names of steel guitar-related people or objects, or musically related words.
(A warning: if you start the puzzle and decide to surf off to another page, when you return to the puzzle, it will have emptied out and you'll have to start over, so if you don't have time to try to finish it in one sitting, you can print it off, then work it on paper and come back afterwards to enter your solution.)
Once you've filled in the puzzle online, you'll be given a code number to email to me. Only I know the code # associated with the correct solution. All those emailing me the correct solution code # will be entered into a drawing at the end of the month for a free CD or tab/track set of your choice from my catalog.
My thanks to Rob Hamilton for outstanding help on this. If you're needing any website assistance, Rob is a great, experienced person to work with and a steel nut like the rest of us. He can be reached at hamboone@flash.net

I started working on your crossword puzzle. What a hoot ! It boggles my mind that you could fit all them thar steel related words together like that. Heck, I've done leart about 16 ton of new things a digging through the dictionary trying the find words that fit. Most of the time I'm pounding on them words like trying to git a square peg in a round hole, a whittlin' a letter here, and a whittlin' thar. I think them Big City folks outta fire that guy who does that thar New York Times crosswords and hire you instead. Put a little twang in them boxes like there should

Colm, I did the SAME THING!! Honest! I shipped MY monitor with all the answers on the screen to Jim just this morning - FED EX, no less. So unless someone else's monitor gets there before mine - I'm the winner hands down!!! But, if you'd like to email me your puzzle solution, I'll take a look and see which ones you missed.

Sounds like a bunch of you are having fun with this thing; that's great. From scanning the solution codes that have come in so far, some of you got it right, and some of you, well... let's just say, better luck next time!
At the end of the month, I'll be posting the solution, the name of the winner (drawn randomly from those submitting correct solutions), and a new puzzle for December.
If ya haven't been over to the website to try it out yet, come on over; the weather's fine! http://www.jimcohen.com
Oh, and when ya come over, please take a moment to sign the guest book and say 'hi'.
Enjoy!

Sure, Ben, depending on how much tread is left!
Glad you're enjoying it.
If anyone else would like a chance to win one (or one of my other CDs, or a tab/track course), come on over and do the steel guitar crossword. If you get it right, you've got a good chance to win the drawing since so far only a few folks got it all right.
Just a little over a week left in this month's puzzle...
Here's the link again http://www.jimcohen.com

Jim,
I'll need to ship you my monitor, too. I just don't know how to leave it on when it's in a box. It's AC, you know, not battery operated. Batteries probably wouldn't last going across country, anyway. Please do hurry and ship it back, I'm sure I'll miss it.
I hope you don't mind the corrections I made. Lucky for me White Out sticks nicely to this flat panel display.

Congratulations to Bob Tuttle for winning the November Crossword Contest! Good job!
Honorable mentions go to Colm Chomicky and Don Walters, both of whom also got the correct solution but, alas, whose names were not picked in the random drawing for the winner.
My thanks to all the other brave people who valiantly tried to solve the puzzle. Better luck with the December puzzle, which I hope to have posted to the website in the next day or two (or three). I'll also post the solution to the November puzzle so all can see where they went astray.
Bob, send me an email and we'll work out arrangements for you to receive your prize!

I guess I'll just have to congratulate Bob on his win. However, if Colm got all of them right, then WHAT did I miss? He helped me with the two hardest questions. And you gave me one hint on another. I could've sworn I had them all right. The only one I could have possibly missed would be Zap, but I think it was right because of Tzar. I guess I'll take a look at the solution and see for myself. Also, for December's puzzle, I think I should choose more players to be on my team.
Seriously, Jim - it was VERY challenging and a lot of fun. Honestly I didn't get anyother help than Colm, Tommy and you. Maybe I'll contact Bob in December. (just kidding) Thanks again for the monthly FUN!
Fondly,
Disgruntled, but enjoying life in Georgia

OK, Donna, you get a "Special Honorable Mention" for the Best Teamwork! Back in High School they called it "plagiarism" but now that we're all adults, we know better, don't we?
And, by the way, you're not gonna get any more hints from me if you go around telling people I gave you HINTS! How doya think that makes me look, huh?

The Solution to the November Crossword has now been posted at my website. Go to http://www.jimcohen.com and follow the links for the puzzle, and then for the solution. I haven't yet taken down the blank version, so you can still see the clues, in addition to the answers. Hope y'all had some fun with this. I'll post the December puzzle as soon as I learn how!

Well, so I missed Tzar because your crossword "people" spelled it Tsar - which in-turn affected my ZAP answer. I never knew the answer to "double curve" but gave OPEE as much of a chance as anything else I could put in the second space. What is OGEE?????? Is that a baseball term?
For anyone who might think Jim was less than honorable by giving me a hint - I'm swearing on all my crossword puzzle books that he simply suggested that one of the letters COULD be an A. Also, if I would have won the CD, my plan was to split it with Colm. It would be the courteous thing to do - and I'm all about courtesy.

Split a CD with Donna? "Like Four to the Bar" would now be "Two to the Half-bar"?... or "Finally Here" would be "Only Halfway There"
I want to thank Jim on his crossword puzzle efforts, what a great idea and very educational as I picked up all kinds of steel guitar factoids I did not know. Also, looks like pretty good odds for successful the pool of finalists. Yep, there are always those tricky words that could go either way, so stick with it Donna.

Well, an honourable mention is better than I've done for a long, long time!

Thanks, Jim. Great idea! I'll be trying again.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Don Walters on 03 December 2003 at 02:02 PM.]</p></FONT>

well, if YOUR people say so . . . It IS your puzzle.<SMALL>Actually, I believe the alternate spelling would be "Czar".</SMALL>

Colm - "Two to the Bar" and "Halfway There" - I like the way you think! Of course we'd split the CD, and you'd get the "C" part and I'd get the "D" part.
I haven't checked to see if the new puzzle is up yet - but I have my pencil and eraser standing by. I do hope the December puzzle has less History-related words, and maybe more words relating to things I know more about . . . like Dentistry - or EVEN words related to raising two boys. (i.e. Sainthood, Cub Scouts, Timeout, Legos, Prozac). I'm definitely ready . . .
