Hukilau Song/ Don Ho Steel ?
Does anyone know who played on that cut and what kind of steel is it? It's got that fat moaning sound (Ricky) not bright and twangy. Great tasty playing, too.
I can upload it somewhere if you can't find it.
thx,
bob

Don Ho L.P. from 70s ??
Hi Bob , If you have the same Don Ho L.P. that I have it was definitely Jerry Byrd !! Jerry did most of the steel on that L.P. , one of my absolute favorites !! You can tell Jerrys "sound" from any others !!! He probably used his Shot Jackson ,custom made non-pedal Sho-Bud on those recordings but I am not positive !!It has a definite "Rick" tone !!! Jerrys steel really sounded great on that L.P. !!! Eddie "C"

This cut is 2:14 and the electric guitar has a strong phaser sound to it. At the modulation from D to E, the steel does a little instrumental, if that helps?

Don Ho
Hi Bob , I think the recording is the same but I don't hear any "phaser" at the modulation steel break !??! On my L.P. "Blue Hawaii" is just prior to the "Hukilau" song and "Byrd" just plays the beautiful heck out of that song !!!! Also has the "Hawaiian Wedding Song" and several others that feature Byrds steel !!! The phaser was on the electric rhythm guitar, not the steel.
Sounds like I need to get that album!

On " Don Ho " L.P. from T.V. !!
Hi Bob ,The L.P. I have was purchased from a T.V. ad back in the 70s , "Don Ho - 30 Hawaiian Favorites" on a "Suffolk Marketing " label !! Most all songs featured Jerry Byrd on steel . It was also available on a 8-track tape !!! I don't know if it would still be available . I'm thinking the record you have is probably different !! There isn't any "phased rhythm" guitar on my recording , just Jerrys steel !! If you can't locate maybe I could make you a cassette tape . TTYL !! Eddie "C"

Don Ho
Bob , I played that sample bite and it sounds similar but I think they added more instruments to the original recording . It said "release date 2006" , but I know I bought mine back in the 70s and mine was probably the original cut and then was reissued in 2006 with overdubbing ??!!! They show the "Don Ho 30 hits" album from T.V., release date of 1978 listing all the tunes as still being available and that is the one I have !!! Recd. your E-mail and sent you some other info !!!
