David Allen Coe Uncensored
Is that really David Allen Coe or is it a knock-off? Stuff like that isn't even really funny.

It is easy to play the steel guitar. Playing so that the audience finds it pleasing is the difficult act.

I think you're referring to the "Nothing Sacred" album that came out in the 70's. I can't even repeat any of the titles on this forum. I have worked with a couple of guys that were with David in those years and there are lots of stories.
The songs were big in the biker bars that he played, but even if he were playing an auditorium show, and someone asked him to keep his show clean, he would launch into one of those songs. David was/is the Howard Stern of country music.

I haven't heard that album but they were broadcasting Willie's picnic on Willie's Place a couple of weeks ago and David Allan Coe was on the show.....I listened to about half of one song and changed stations........just to put it mildly, it would definatly fall under the title of UN-censored!!
So, I guess he hasn't changed much.

Billy, I've got that on a CD that an engineer burned off for me with a whole variety of whacky stuff. It sounds like The Sons Of The Pioneers to me. He also had some outakes of Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin promoing "The Caddy" as well as Art Linkletter, George Burns, George Jessell and Jack Benny from a Maskers Stag roast all doing blue humor.
All of that was tame compared to David Alan Coe's infamous album.

Clyde, Here is how Mr Coe Hit Nashville. In 1973 or 74, I can't remember which year, not really an event in my fading memory, He started hanging out in Tootsies and other lower broadway bars in the afternoons, Spreading the tales that he had been on Death Row in Prision and at the same time his father was too and Later on During Convention convention week, the Club owner of the Merchants Hotel dive that I worked in from time to time, hired him to work on the regular bands breaks. He had a spiel that he had rehearsed and rambled on about Truth , Beauty and a bunch of other crap that varied from song to song. This went on between each and every song.
He was not the type of individual that you would want your wife, daughter, sister or mother around. He didn't have a whole lot of talent or ability and I was surprised when he got a recording deal and started hearing him on the radio. Just goes to show You that Nashville isn't a recent thing about putting out garbage music and the public's taste in music really sux and has for a long time.
I have never bought one of his records or Cd's and Actually refused a free one when it was offered to me.

You want something that will REALLY turn your head and your stomach, check out Governor Jimmie Davis' sides he recorded between '29 and '32 for Doggone and Victor. Wow.
"Last time I seen her and I ain't seen her since, she was scratchin her _ _ _ _ on a barb' wire fence."
Makes DAC seem like Governor Jimmie Davis' "You Are My Sunshine."
er....

I didn't like the "Nothing Sacred" album he cut but I think he did have some talent and put out some good records in his career. Most bands around are still doing his version of "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" even though it was cut 35 years ago. I like "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile", "She Used To Love Me a Lot", "Willie, Waylon and Me", "Jack Daniels if you Please", "The Ride" and others. Then there's tunes he wrote for others such as Tanya Tucker's "Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone".........At one point he did a version of "Stand By Your Man" from the viewpoint of a father talking to his daughter which was pretty cool IMHO. All that said, I agree with John F. in that I don't think I'd want him around my wife or daughter as his is pretty crude at times but he does have talent.........JH in Va.
Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!!

John Floyd, yes I was aware of David in those days. He used to park his car with his name on the side in front of the Ryman every day. He was a great self promoter in the style of P.T. Barnum. We used to open for him in the early days after he formed the Tennessee Hat Band. There was no one around that could match him for sheer drawing power in bars. He could be a pain, but he could also put on an electric show when he was in the mood.
Once we were opening and the crowd was not paying us much attention and he walked out on stage and said "I'm David Allan Coe and this is a damn good band and if y'all don't treat them better'n this, I ain't coming out." There have been some good players thru his bands.

Another quick David story. I saw him at the Crest in Wrightsville Beach. Tumbleweed Band opened for David and committed the sin of doing one of his songs in their set. It POed David and he wouldn't do any of his, he did all Willie Nelson songs.
