How the heck do ya fix this?

Post by Ben Turner »

I just got my Webb Ext. cab in the mail today I bought from a fellow forumite and it was in as described condition, cab grill and speaker all look like new. It has I believe to be a BW 1501-4 in it, same as my Webb 614-E. So of course I immediately ripped it out of the box and plugged it in and started jamming immediately also hearing cracking sounds, I thought to myself "OMG, the speaker is blown?" I don't think so? The surround in 2 different spots has gave way, I guess the glue has just "given up" on it, I can hold it down in these two spots and hear crystal clear sound. Can it and should it be fixed or should it be replaced? and if so what sort of glue would I use, I've never done speaker repair before. Here's a couple pics to demonstrate the problem.

You can get kits and instructions to fix the speaker here:
http://www.parts-express.com/speakerRep ... tGuide.cfm

If you don't feel confident about doing it yourself look for a shop in your area that specializes in speaker repair.

Can't the foam surround just be re-glued? It's not dry rotted and it's not punctured or damage in anyway that I can tell. It's just loose.

Found an even better solution. By buddy owns a music store and is an expert tube/amp repair technician/speaker re-coner. He says to bring it by and he'll fix it for free. Good to have friends like that :D

Thanks for your help.

Ben...You may want to check around the magnet for the model and ohm rating (usually near the speaker wire connectors). BW 1501 speakers have smooth cones, your appears to be ribbed which normally indicates a kevlar impregnated model. May possibly be a 1502, which is still a fine speaker.
