Anyone familiar with 'GigMasters' booking service?

Post by Jim Cohen »

We're looking to book a few more gigs and could use some outside help with that. Have any of you had any experience with, or heard much about, an outfit called "GigMasters" (www.gigmasters.com)? Wonder if they're legit and effective....?

Thanks,
Jimbeaux

Mickey, that's a good question for b0b. A regular forumite could not see the individual email addresses; can only send email to each other thru the Forum, not directly.

b0b, you readin' this?

I've never gotten anything from them directly but I have read their ads on CL.They might actually get somebody a gig once in awhile, but I figure if they're spamming us(some of us anyway)they're probably spamming the venues as well, and encountering similar sales resistance.

It might be a better idea to figure out which venues the band wants to work, go there, and ask the management which booking agency(ies) they use. Then approach the agencies.

I got the same email, but I have heard of them.

One of the groups I sit in with was booked at a corporate event from our resume on Gigmasters. It's a general online clearing house of acts of all types. They've targeted the web searches for casual users. Try to Google "(insert your city here) Bands". They'll show up as a paid ad at the top of the page. Handy if you don't have a clue of what you're looking for.

I've got no idea how they got everyone's email. :x

I got it too, but then I get a lot of spam.

The only way that anyone could access the forum email addresses would be through hacking an admin account (mine or Joey's). I see no indication that that has happened. Even if you had root access to the server itself, it would be difficult to get at that information and turn it into a mailing list.

I'm not going to point fingers, but there are a lot of other places where many of us have casually released our email addresses. Google your address to see what I mean.

b0b, that may be true, but doesn't the fact that all of us got this on the same day suggest that it was not by just scouring the internet for randomly-available names but rather by some coordinated means to acquire steel guitarists' names and spam us all at once?

could be from almost anywhere...online music retailers we all frequent perhaps? Its from a source that knows our common interest is music. Musicians Friend, Sweetwater, Elderly etc? ....someone has sold their database info to these GigBlasters.com because it would be far too laborious to mine from Online Steelers Registry or this site.

Nah, I don't believe that. When this many steelers all get it on one day, I think it's coming from a consolidated list of steelers from somewhere.

I got that ad as well. I'm also looking to spread some of our booking joy around, so anyone with agent/contacts in the S.E., I'd appreciate hearing from you. The gigmasters ad originated in CT, I believe.

Well this thread has drifted to the subject of where they got their list of names. But, basically, I think it looks like an interesting service and I'm curious if they really get gigs for folks. I asked a few friends here in Philly and one of them said they know someone who got a few low-paying gigs through them. That's all I've heard so far...
