Fun article about the history of tuning part 2
Bob......you closed the other thread before I had a chance to publicly explain my comments to Eric, about his health.......I hope you find this post reasonable. and within the forums boundaries.
Eric, I was being sincere, not condescending about your health problems.....I am sorry you took it that way........This is the first time I'm hearing about your battle with cancer.....
Actually, how I learned about you having any health problems was through your own posted words......If you remember, there were a series of threads where you posted comments about Reece over his tone beliefs, and comments towards me on the tuning subject......you were also poking fun at my writing skills........You edited out those digs, which is unusual for you, Eric........ when you mentioned your reason for editing was because you needed to focus on getting well and you were now doing better...Until today, that is the extent of what I knew about your health issues.... I prayed for you then and will continue doing so because I believe in prayers.........
Unfortunately, I read all of your comments over the past few months, before the edits.....Which is why I concluded you were continuing the same approach towards me within the thread b0b just closed....That is why I responded with "Leave me alone".....
.....If you, or anyone, is curious about whether I believe I sound perfectly in tune......just ask me......I have always stated, I am not a perfect musician, nor do I always play perfectly in tune.....the tuning of instruments is not always under the individual musicians control.......Our performances are either approved or modified by the.....Producer, engineer, artist and fellow musicians.......My job is to present a flexible attitude towards everything I'm asked to play......These tuning threads are aways volatile.........What sounds in tune to one person may sound out to another.........

Paul, it's always great to read your posts. I doubt you remember, but back in 1981 I was with a band that did a 4 night run with the Statesiders and that singer guy you had with you, Mel Tillis. We were truly honored to be on the bill and then about a year later you and the band were staying in a hotel a few blocks from where we were playing in Seattle and you all came in a sat in. I think you had a new rhythm section and were looking to get some playing in before heading up to Canada. I was pretty green on the steel and had a D10 MSA that I'd only had for a few months. I had been tuning it straight up with a tuner and wasn't really happy with my intonation. When you played my guitar you asked if you could retune it and I said please do. When I went back to playing it sounded in tune to me for the first time since I'd had it. From that point on I've tuned the E's and B's with the tuner and the rest by ear. On the C6 I tune the C's G's and the F and then the rest by ear. I must thank you for setting me in a direction that has worked for me now for many years.
By the way you may remember that we were the guys who gave Mel a big ol' hairy cookie right on stage in Spokane in remembrance of his hairy cookie bit in the act. We were going to give it to him after the show, but your band leader told us to go ahead and take it to him on stage.
The only drawback to having you guys play on our gear was we couldn't blame the gear anymore. Brian Sterling was playing my Tele and you on my steel. Sheesh no more excuses.

I had a long response to your thread, and I didn't "edit" it. I just didn't post it.
I don't notice that these tuning threads have been "volatile".
There's a lot of good information in the ones I've been involved in.
Some people don't seem to like being questioned very much or "at all" in some notable cases. I think that's where the "volatility" comes in.
I never have minded it that much. It usually makes me think. Besides, I'm nobody anybody needs to convince.
I'm nobody in the grand scheme of things. Not anybody you or Reece would know anyhow. I think I'm a lot nicer and more even than youse seem to paint me for daring to disagree with your fatwahs on "tone" or "tuning".
Thanks for the good wishes and prayers.
This year has been a very good one compared to last year.

I trust we have permission to slow down cuts and compare them to the other instruments on them......If you, or anyone, is curious about whether I believe I sound perfectly in tune......just ask me......I have always stated, I am not a perfect musician, nor do I always play perfectly in tune.....the tuning of instruments is not always under the individual musicians control.......Our performances are either approved or modified by the.....Producer, engineer, artist and fellow musicians.......My job is to present a flexible attitude towards everything I'm asked to play......These tuning threads are aways volatile.........What sounds in tune to one person may sound out to another.........
