Cracker Barrel CDs
The new Heritage Music Collection CDs should be in all Cracker Barrel restaurant stores by now.
The 15-CD series includes a healthy dose of steel--both pedal and non-pedal. There's a Sacred Steel Masters anthology compiled from previously released Arhoolies, a new Bill Kirchen (the Telecaster Master) Dieselbilly album with Ricky Davis on several cuts (great stuff Ricky!), an album by Asleep at the Wheel featuring Jim Murphy and Cindy Cashdollar on steel, and a CD by Seldome Scene with Mike Auldridge on Dobro.
This is a great series. Wonderful artists, very nicely presented. And such a deal at $11.99.
Here's the URL where you can read about 'em --including complete liner notes--and hear audio samples.

Hi, Bob, thanks for the heads up on these- I don't usually patronize C Barrel- but I feel a rather expensive lunch in my immediate future! (BTW, the J.D. Crowe CD must have Jerry Douglas all over it!)

You're right, Mark. Jerry Douglas is on the J. D. Crow album. In fact, the cover photo is a Dobro pic!
I feel another expensive lunch coming on too. Really, you can't beat these albums for $12. They are all top-notch.
I believe this series was created in part as an effort to heal some past discrimatory practices at the Barrel.

In a conversation yesterday with staff of the National Council for the Traditional Arts, I learned that the CDs are not in all CB stores yet. All 450 stores won't have 'em until the end of June. Apparently the delay is in the production of the display/listening units. Guess I was just lucky in finding them at 3 stores on I-75 in central Florida.
To clarify my involvement, I wrote the liner notes for the Sacred Steel album and contributed a small photo. I was also the producer on the Arhoolie albums from which the tracks were selected. I had nothing to do with the other albums in the series--just enthusiastic.
