Lloyd Green alert: Harper Simon interview

Post by b0b »

What did (steel guitarist) Lloyd Green bring to the album’s dynamic?
Well, he brought a hell of a lot. He’s such an extraordinary player. I had a lot of great players on the record, but Lloyd Green! I like every single thing he played, every single note he chooses. He’s an astonishingly economic and tasteful player.

He’s everywhere.
I think he takes four solos! I don’t know how many other people in rock and roll are having that many pedal steel solos on their record, but that’s just how this one turned out.

I am quoting Jerry Douglas from his forum regarding a recent thread where someone asked about his favorite players, in different styles of guitars. Here is what he said about Lloyd:
Lloyd Green has a way of letting you know he is the best steel guitar player in the universe. His impossible slides and slants across ten strings scare the hell out of most of his ilk. He has a legacy of hits from Johnny Paycheck’s Jukebox Charlie to his almost singlehanded assurance of making Don Williams a hit record every time he pushed down the volume pedal. His tone is perfect and he is mechanical and sympathetic in the same note. He played the most beautiful solo I’ve ever heard on a steel guitar when he recorded with Ricky Skaggs on a song called No One Can Hurt You. It will make you cry.

Awesome video of one of my heroes.

"controlled radio environment"

Why would Mr. Green be doing a session with anyone ("21-year-old record producer") who didn't know who he was? This blows my mind. I'm sure Mr. Green doesn't comes cheap either. You don't hire Lloyd Green and then ask him NOT to sound like Lloyd Green. Wonder who he was referring to? Someone who thought they were being cute and got on LDG's wrong side!

Chris,

Great piece on Lloyd. I really enjoyed it. I noticed it was not a stock pickup. Anyone know what the pickup was on his LDG?
