Can Someone Identify This Guitar?

Post by Chris Schlotzhauer »

On another forum this was posted to ID. The guitar player behind Chet. What kind of guitar is he holding? For that matter, who is the player?
Is the guitar a Bigsby?

Great playing by Chet BTW

Looks a little like a Coral guitar though I don't remember ever seeing one quite like that. Certainly has some 'Bigsbyness' to it as well, though. I'll be interested to find out what it is as well.

I would guess the guitar player to be Jackie Phelps who later appeared on HeeHaw.

FWIW Pete Wade is pictured in the Stratosphere catalog with a doubleneck and he is the only Nashville-based player mentioned or photographed. Jerry Shook supposedly played a Stratosphere as well.

There were single and double neck versions. Jimmy Bryant was an endorser.

It is definitely Jackie Phelps and I remember him playing that guitar. I had always assumed it to be a one-off custom built, but I defer to those who might have better info.

Chet used a Stratosphere on the tune "Somebody Stole My Gal" in the fifties.
