I play steel and guitar but usually not in the same song. I have yet to learn to keep my finger picks on while playing guitar.

Terry Christoffersen plays a Steinberger Guitar that gives him more room to play both. I can only do one at a time.

It's really a do-able thing to do! You just have to figure out what way works best for you. Finger picks or not, flat pick on steel, or both? I've done em all for many years. The amp thing is another issue. It looks like Danny M. is using 2 amps. Right now, I use a POD with steel patches and guitar patches and an A/B box.

Oh yes, and BTW it was seeing Dick Meis 30 years ago in Denver that gave me the confidence to try it. Glad I did.

Thanks again Dick!

As Rick says, it's pretty do-able. I have done it for years. Sometimes switching to the tele with my three picks, other times doing the steel licks with a straight pick and my fingers. Just whatever the situation calls for.

I guess I never really thought about it, the only issue I can see for me is a play guitars with NO picks and the Steel with picks...

I'm not changing either execution...and if this is something I chase like some of you guys it has to be 100% on both Instruments...

Worth trying though... Danny M is really good , I really enjoy his playing in these songs.

I see Alvin and others have also been doing this, once again it appears I am late to the party !

Question:

Is there a lot of banging the Tele into the Steel going on ? Dings and nicks waiting to happen ?

I never play my Strat and Mullen at the sme time, They have this Love/Hate relationship and to be honest I'm not sure which one has the better lawyer. Drama, Drama, I don't need.
Yes Danny is a GREAT musician.

I've done this since the late seventies, first with a Les Paul and then a Tele.....I use thumb and fingerpicks for both instruments and use a strap like Alvin B. does so the left arm can go under the neck of the guitar, also, my Tele has a B-Bender in it so I need the strap. On guitar only gigs I take off the finger picks except when I have to play fast single string things, there's less "drag" with 'em on......JH in Va.

Tony asked about banging the guitar into the steel, yes for me that is a consideration. The headstock of the tele wants to hit against the back of the steel near the headstock. I only play both on maybe a half dozen songs in a whole night's dance job.

Thanks Clyde, I suspected that this was the case. I don't see how the banging is avoided., it also seems that as a Steel player you really have to modify how you sit behind the Steel, the distance. Then if you are to close it can effect your guitar playing. Seems very awkward but I am going to try it...

Don't have a Tele. But the Sho-Bud and the Les Paul sound good together. :)

This is what happens when you have well arranged parts. Just play your part and the song will come out fine. Danny does a remarkable job.

I like to use my Gibson RD Artist guitar for this, because it hangs neck high, out of the way for my left hand.

One dude I saw had a device which allowed him to put on his finger picks quickly by imbedding them into a cusion with which he could poke them on and off. I might have to try it my self.

I've tried it a few times, with the guitar on strap but sitting low like Danny M., but found trying to avoid banging the guitar neck against the steel or steel leg while playing steel too distracting. My concern is not only with damage, but, with the guitar's volume on, unpleasant noise! And I struggle playing guitar with fingerpicks on. Danny M. sure has mastered it, though! Great job!

Alvin, I never saw the Tele in your avatar before.

Additionally, I don't use any picks while playing Telecaster but do use picks with the Steel, so that adds yet another element, but I am still gonna have a wack at it..

I'm not at all worried about playing the parts or switching, to me it is about the banging of the Tele headstock/neck...

we'll see..
