The world of steel guitar would be a much better place without Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Weldon Myrick, Paul Franklin, Tommy White, Sonny Garrish, Kayton Roberts, Mike Johnson, Russ Pahl, Bruce Bouton, Dan Dugmore, Al Perkins, Bobbe Seymour, Steve Hinson, Tim Sergent, Russ Hicks, Randle Currie, Dan Galysh, Dave Ristrim, Gary Carter, Steve Fishell, Fats Kaplin, Doug Jernigan, James Pennebaker, Gary Morse, Robby Turner, Stu Basore, Rusty Danmyer, Pat Severs just for starters...

Reading the constant Nashville-bashing on the forum you would think it was the worst place in the world for steel guitar...

By the way, not that it matters, but the article says only that the city government decided not to rename this particular street, not that "Nashville Tennesse Doesn't want" to honor Patsy Cline at all. In fact, if you actually take the time to read it, it makes it clear that they do.

"Trashville" I don't like the music coming out of there, but so what. Nashville is the state capitol of Tennessee and should be referred to with some respect.

I to get tired of the Nashville Bashing, but I understand. Its Not the Town but the Music part of Nashville that upsets most of us. There is also some crappy Country comming out of L.A and N.Y but Nashville is the home of Country music, so I guess thats why it gets picked on so much.
Now with all do respect to Mr, Finney, There are some very opinionated folks on the forum some can be down rite A-holes,but they are not any wrose than some of the Publishers, Agents, Engineers and Stars that I know you and a lot of the above mentioned Steelers have to put up with In music city Nashville, But you do it because they have something to offer, Money and Fame. Your reason for not wanting to be involved on the forum is wrong. We here on the forum all need you pro players, but lets face it you don't need us because we have nothing to offer. IMHO BD

Well,It's really because she is from Califonia's History of Country Music from Capitol Records and not Nashville's neighborhood.That's what's wrong with everything in this world today.If it's not from your own town it no good for the city to make money off of your name.That's why we have so many cry babies in this world and it is so not necessary.Please everybody give each other respect to each others rights.

Patsy's really a Virginia girl and her mother still lived here until her death. She's associated with Nashville as I believe all her major sessions were conducted at Bradley's Barn by Owen Bradley and she was a member of the Opry and packed the house each time she performed I've heard. Also, she cut some things at Fernwood Farms Studio which was located in the area I live now (Southeast Virginia). The studio was owned and operated by the Phelps Bros. who were local artists and went to Hollywood to appear in cowboy movies with the likes of Tex Ritter, Ray Whitley & others. I have an old 1952 National D-8 steel which was owned by one of her former steel guitarists before she became famous.

All that said, I think one day she probably will get a street named after her in one of the newer areas but I just don't think they want to re-name a street......JH in Va.

Take note that Pete F., excluded Randy Beavers.. One of my favorite players in Nashville. There are those who are left out. Patsy has lots of company. As for players not partaking in confrontations as they did in the 90's, they've suddenly realized that it takes more than a few picks to back their wild claims that at one point went unchallenged.

I don't care if they name a street after Patsy or not. In fact, when you start that, someone is going to get left out. If Patsy is qualified, why are Tammy, Connie, Jan Howard, Dottie West, Jean Shepherd, Reba, Elvis, George Jones, Marty Robbins, etc...(I could go on forever) not qualified? What did Patsy do (other than the plane crash) that these people didn't do? What about Jim Reeves, or Del Reeves, or Hawkshaw Hawkins for that matter. I don't want an answer, because there's not a set of accomplishment that are required. It was someone's brainchild and the city government didn't see the need for it and I agree.

Hometowns are where the streets need to be named after the famous people, not Nashville. My opinion.

Dennis, I know what you mean. I doubt the majority even knew about this, or cared. You remember that guy put one of his big crosses on I-75 a few years ago. He put it within the interstate right of way, where nothing is allowed to be erected for safety, etc... reasons. They made him take it down, and all these people raised cane.... "that's the cross", they made him tear down the cross", etc.... It didn't matter if it was a cross or an advertizement for Katch One, it was not in the permitted place. Point is, people get their indivudual interest in mind and have a hard time with anything but that.

A lot of it has got money involved that we don't see. Remember the movie Wall Street? In the dressing room after the racquet ball game, Michael Douglas says: "I just got on the board of the New York Zoo, it cost me a mil."

Patsy is not a `Celebrity`. The modern phoney-baloney celeb' driven media only allows for the immediacy of fame. Here today, gone tomorrow. This being the case, you're unlikely to have a Taylor Swift Drive, unless a maker of fancy garb opens a twenty minute suit service.

Unfortunately Pete has spoken the truth.....I've seen where pro's have been run off by the posting behavior of a few........Pete and I are among a few that endure.... Bill, anyone can challenge musical beliefs with a typewriter....When sonic and technical musical concepts are played on the steel guitar, its the sound of its music that confirms or disproves a posted opinion with most folks.

Thanks Paul for your input. I do know about the politics in Nashville. Been there and done that,I choose to leave.
I would just like to have a place where all of us, pro's included could visit, swap stories and just have a good time.It wasn't my intent to slam Pete or any other player and I certianly hope no-one took it that way. I only wish there was a way to rectify this problem so everyone would feel welcome here.

I wasn't aware of your post until a few minutes ago. Thanks for your comments. I tried to learn more about Pete's starting point in country music, and it became a study of his involvement with musicians whom I'm not familiar with. I'm a country musician. My taste in music at the very heart of country, would be a recording such as "Close Up The Honky Tonks", a Buck Owens favorite, recorded by Gunn Randi Espebu. I can't get enough of the lovely voice in that recording. Your great expertise suggests that you may know how that recording came about. Who is playing steel in that great arrangement? The steel was kept somewhat in the back, always crying to match the lyrics of her beautiful voice. Thanks, if you could offer any information.

Paul, you've been too busy in and out of Nashville to have heard some of the ribbings that were quite commonly made by lead players from the Nashville area. When they travel north with their road bands, they appear as tight groups, making jokes about musicians here in the north. Jokes such as: Play two notes on a fiddle, and I can tell you if you are from the north or south. As you know, that would not be considered funny by an experienced musician. Attitudes really need a bit of adjustments in those who regard musicians in the north to be lacking in musicianships.

I grew up in Texas, but learned to play steel in the Boston area after my family moved up there during my last year of high school...most of my recollections about the ribbing of musicians were the "northern" players putting down the southern players...seldom heard it the other way around...
