Mr. O'Connor has always been amazing. Back in the early 70's there was a very good friend of mine by the name of Dudley Hill, who unfortunately lost a battle with colon cancer 5 years ago. I was over at his place and he was showing me some flat-picking stuff that he was quite proficient in and he was telling me about teaching lessons to this 11 year old. He told me it wasn't really teaching it was more like just playing a song and this young kid would just play it back. I thought he was blowing smoke until about a year later this young player was winning contests as a flat picker and a fiddler. Another good old friend of mine, fiddler Barbara Lamb, was giving some fiddle lessons to Mark when he was 11 and she was 14. Soon he was beating her in fiddle contests and she told him that's enough lessons for you. Benny Thomassen took him in as a protege and by the time Mark was 16 he was playing with the likes of David Grissman and Stefan Grapelli.
Apparently he was born to be a great musician.
