Nashville R&B and rock and roll bands

Post by Jason Odd »

It's been a while since I've seen a topic regarding garage bands from Nashville, and i've been swapping emails with someone on this very topic, so I thougth I'd share some of the links here:

And although it hasn't been updating as much as it used to, the classic Nashville rock band website:

Rock Combos of Nashville:
http://nashlinks.com/sixties.htm

Some different pages have popped up over the years, most of which are about garage bands from the US during the 60s, but few of them are Nashville specific.
A former member of one of the Nashville bands
likes to document reunion shows that have been going for a while now.

The pics below are mostly from the reunion shows, but each page in a book, and towards the end there's a series of archival pics for those interested.

The cd "Night Train to Nashville" has a good booklet explaining all the R&B bands from Nashville. I found it interesting that some of the R&B artist used the same musicians as the Country artist. It talks about WLAC radio, Randy's Record Shop, and mail order chickens. The night DJ's were white but people thought thay were black.

Is that the same Charlie McCoy that plays the harmonica?

Just played yesterday with Jerry Armour from the Cavaliers, a version of which is still kicking around. He had some pretty fun stories to tell about back in the day.

Hi Wayne, I feel that the Night Train comp was a great set, and needed to happen.
The only thing, due to it's need to explore the local R&B scene, the up and coming rockers were mostly skipped, even the ones like the Gators, Escorts, which were primarily R&B outfits, but of the "blue-eyed" soul variety.

There's a reason Etta James cut a live album in Nashville for Chess in '63, it was part of the thriving R&B scene in the south.

Did you know hoss Allen's night Train TV show has been compiled on DVD by Bear Family in Germany.. I've seen some, it's a great show and awesome snapshot of live soul and R&B in 1966.

Wayne, that is indeed the same Charlie McCoy, his band the Escorts went on to provide members to Barefoot Jerry, Area Code 615, Monument Studios Music City Five house band, and the core of Cinderella Sound Studios run by Wayne Moss.
Not to mention famed string arranger Bergen White, who was a latter 60s Escort member, and who also recorded solo.

Charlie recorded with the Escorts on his early Monument 45s, on which they were co-billed on the label. But by the time he cut his debut, the harmonica aspect was the focus, and they were truly solo albums. (although various Escorts were involved)

p.s. Chris, good to hear that Jerry is still active, thanks for sharing
