my opinion is that john should write some new songs, rather than rehashing old barroom jam numbers.

Hmmm... seems to me the man has made a lifelong career out of writing new songs and becoming a living American institution in the bargain; if he feels like "rehashing old barroom jam numbers", I'd say he's probably earned the right.

Betcha he's ENJOYING himself! :)

i suppose, but watching a ten piece band (or so) on letterman play an uninteresting version of a song i've already forgotten due to it's forgetability is disappointing to me.

I've NEVER HEARD John do anything bad,Even the early CCR still sounds as fresh today as it did decades ago.[just my opinion]. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

Hey, my two cents is that Fogerty can do anything he wants at this point--kinda like Springsteen or McCartney, I 'spose. Call 'em barroom jam songs or whatever, but they're great tunes played by a superb band--Greg Leisz's steel playing is just gorgeous (anybody want to tab it out???), Buddy Miller's twanging away, the harmonies are great--what's not to like?

The Blue Ridge Rangers ARE a cover band. Fogerty does write original music..he also plays country and bluegrassy covers in a cover band. It doesnt have to be one or the other does it? For all I know he plays tube in a polka band too.

I have the first rangers album and think its really good. havent heard this one yet but will.

he played everything on the first one. it was actually pretty lame from a professional standpoint.

oh, and...why does he make his voice sound funny like that?

and let's not forget it was james burton who created the first suzy q. licks..

Lame from a technical stand point? Thats a laugh. The first album was technically brilliant. Fogerty played and sang everthing. When you can sing "Hearts Of Stone" in the same key let me know.

Kevin, you are quite obviously a Fogerty fan and that's fine, but understand that the rest of us are also entitled to our opinions, be they supportive or otherwise...

My question has got nothing to do with anything in general, but everything - specifically, when it comes to the nature of your opinion base.

I have known people, who had great tastes in music that never played any istruments or couldn't hold a note while singing. They still turned me on to some great music.

I don't care if someone is a musician or not, when he gives his opinion.

John Fogerty

Post by Dennis Ellerbee »

Hey guys, I just wanted you to listen to to some good music with great steel playing. I did not want to start a internet fight. If you like John listen to it. If you don't then don't. I really enjoyed it so I was passing it along.

Most people have never built an automobile, but I'm sure there are no shortage of opinions as to what is a bad one or a good one. I've never cared for CCR or Fogerty in particular, but so what? I'm just another guy following the beat of a different drummer ....

Here is the first thread from early September with posts about this new Blue Ridge Rangers album, and TV performances:

I provided a link in one of my posts in the thread above to a good article on John from the Los Angeles Times.

And a second thread, more about the live band itself which goes into detail about band member James Pennebaker's role on steel guitars of different types:

He doesn't have to play anything h doesn't want to. It's obvious that he likes this kind of music. A lot of us bemoan the fact that we are not presented enough opportunities to play these "old barroom jam numbers" ourselves, so why would we complain that an icon who likes our kind of music, has chosen to promote it in this way? It doesn't really matter if we think he really sounds country, or if he does a good job. More folks will see him on the talk shows playing this stuff, than will see any of us at the local VFW.
More power to him. Hope he tours with this show.

That ole gal [SUSIE Q ] has made the rounds. Dale Hawkins wrote it and recorded it with James in 1957, In 63 Lonnie Mack did an instrumentel version [all us young guitar players did his version] back when instrumentels meant something. In 1964 Gene Vincent covered it,also the Stones.Quick Silver in 1966.CCR in 1968,Flash Cadillac,Everly Brothers,Linda McCartney,Johnny Rivers in 1979,Luis Miguel did a spanish cover in 1987.Just my opinion my two favorite cuts were Lonnie Mack's and CCR. YOU BETCHA, DYK?BC.

Fogerty isn't the same these day's, but can still turn in a fine performance.
Nothing he does now will match how he did the songs back in the day, like Suzie Q, which CCR would jam the flying fickleriver out of for 10 mins. or more.

I'm speaking of the anger and emotional fire that was such an important part of his best music. He's a happier man these days. I hope he hasn't forgotten how to jam.
