Completely Baffled

This is the problem, maybe someone can shed a light on this. I have my Yamaha PSR140 connected via MIDI to my computer sound card (sound blaster live platinum,) to record parts along with BIAB. The signal is obviously getting to the computer as when I play, the notes are visible on the BIAB keyboard on screen. The problem is I have no sound. Can any one help please.

Open Control Panel, find the multimedia icon and look under any tab related to devices, or preferred devices. Choose the source you want to use and apply it. As regards no volume for Midi channels, open the mixer panel and ensure that the Midi channel is not muted, or at zero level.

Here is kind of a WAG ( wild a@@ guess) as I don't have either of your hardware items.

Your input is comming from the Yamaha and it is sending MIDI info on a particular channel (1 to 16).

Your audio card is sending out a tone based on a MIDI channel ( 1 to 16 ).

BIAB assigns channels 1 to 16 to each "instrument" plus the "Thru" channel.

So, you need to insure that all three items are on the same MIDI channel and/or a channel that is assigned in BIAB to generate MIDI notes.

What may well be going on is that the Yamaha is sending MIDI on channel 1 which is being accepted by BIAB (thus the visual keyboard working) but the sound card's MIDI is sending out MIDI note messages to a channel that is not assigned an "instrument" in BIAB. Thus, no sound.

To check the channels assigned in 2009 BIAB do this:

Main menu item "Opt."

under this go the the bottom option "Preference"

Choose the "MIDI Options" tab

At the bottom right corner of this window choose "Channel" button.

Here is where you set what the channel is for each instrument (and other items).

Now, make sure that the Yamaha and the audio card are transmitting on these channels.

I would click 'Options'>'midi drivers' and make sure a midi input driver is listed.

You might also want to check the midi thru setting in BIAB as well as the midi drivers. I used to run that same set up on a win 98 system, but when I went to XP pro, the creative drivers wouldn't work properly. Not sure what OS you are using.

The midi thru option as I recall was a big factor when playing from the keyboard in BIAB.
