Who's the steeler?

Post by Walter Glockler »

In the mid seventies a Dutch vocal trio named Pussycat had a major hit in Europe with "Mississippi". Who's the steeler player playin' the intro and the lead break?

Pedal steel on Pussycats Mississippi was played by John Theunissen.
He played the Framus (German) pedal steel. Many Dutch players started out on this brand.

Thanks for the info, Peer. Is or was John Theunissen a regular steel player or a guitar player doubling on pedal steel?
Thanks,
Walter

Hello Walter,

I only know that this John Theunissen played his steel on a few Pussycat songs (Smile e.g.) but in other clips he playes lead guitar.
I haven't heared from him since. But he certainly influenced a few of us down here in the Netherlands to start playing.
And many of us on a similas Framus (me included).

Here's me and the Framus.
We played in church when our singer got married.
I had to play the steel kind off tilted because the legs werent adjustable.

A hymn book under two of the legs works wonders... :D

Are there hymn books that could raise the legs for the amount required for the heigth I needed (see photo).
We're talking 8 cm's here, Alan...That would be encyclopedia.
New problem arises: now you have lifted the legs: what about the pedal rods...or the angle of the pedals:
SOLUTION: just put an encyclopedia as a footrest > Problem solved???????

If your hymn books are not the right size, then you need to change denomination.... :D :D

I imagine that's an issue in a country like the Netherlands where the average male is something like 6'1". :)

Framus pedal steel

Post by Jan Viljoen »

Old thread again:

Here is John Theunissen on a Framus pedal steel.
Looks like the C neck.

Many years ago I had a red Framus Atlantic semi acoustic 6 string, but I sold it sadly :(

I remember playing a Framus 6 string back about 50 years ago and I still remember it for its nice and easy action...
