Proper name for?

Post by Jim Dickinson »

Whats the proper or a good name for larger non pedal Steel Guitars, things like multi neck Stringmasters, Fender Dual Pro's, Double, Triple, Quad Neck Nationals, etc, in other words those on their own legs.

I do not think the name "Lap" Steel describes these larger units well. I have been calling tham a "Flat" Steel for lack of another name, have heard some call them "Console" models.

What's you take on this, other than "Non Pedal", which sounds a bit awkward to me. Jim

That´s logical, keeping in mind that a lap dancer who
gets up on her legs becomes a CONSOLE DANCER.McUtsi

I believe the proper name would be "STEEL GUITAR"
Since they were around long before pedal steels, they own that distinction.

The qualifier "pedal" would need to be added to the name in the case of steel guitars with pedals added.

It always seemed so simple to me also. It's either a pedal steel or a steel guitar.

I agree with CrowBear.

If it has legs and/or more than one neck, it is a "console" steel guitar.
If you hold it on your lap, it is a "lap" steel guitar.
If it has pedals, it is a "pedal steel" guitar.

However, if you don't play it with a steel bar, then you have to call it a Hawaiian guitar. :D

It's a KEYBOARD! Haven't enough barflys told you that already?
