Take a look and you'll see what "The Fitz" dealt with that tragic night. She left from the other end of Park Point about 3 miles south.

Thanks George,
I've gotten a few other emails from my 'mariner' friends on this very website.
Simply Awesome.
It's no wonder the "BIG FITZ" went to the bottom. It's these unbelievably, unreal windows into 'mother nature' that still have to make us stand up and pay attention and ask,
"Who really is in charge here?"

Wow...George! I have been to Duluth twice, once in July and it was one of the most beautiful places I had ever been. Having that memory, I volunteered for the next trip...in January! What a mistake. I was outside in the weather only once for about an hour, but came home with pneumonia. St. Paul seemed 40 degrees warmer...I guess because it wasn't on the lake. www.genejones.com

Hi George, I toured with Gord Lightfoot who wrote The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzerald. I remember Gord reading an article in Newsweek & we were in the middle of recording the new album. He stayed up all night & wrote the song & we went into the studio & cut this incredible eerie song on the second take late in the evening. Had the chance to play Duluth & meet some of the families over the years. I got off the road with Gord 10 years ago to be with my family. It is a great tribute, writtten by a master. Those pictures tell it all! All the best for a Merry Xmas to everyone! http://www.members.home.net/music12/index.html

WOW PeeWee.....Thanks so much for dropping in. And especially the eerie and mystical way
that the "Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald"
came to be the great epic folk tale it has become and with your haunting pedal steel.
On this great Forum we all talk about pedal this and knee lever that, add this, eliminate that, have fun with it, get serious with the right hand, and on and on and on and on and on..........whoa.....
but you laid down some of the greatest pedal steel ever with just this one song.
Thanks PeeWee....we love ya...

When I first heard the steel on this song, I knew I had to have that phase shifter effect.
I got a new Gibson Maestro unit that had three speeds selected by colored rocker switches. I still recall the goose bumps when I first used it on our TV show. I knew I had something different and I loved that sound. Haunting was not how I ever described it but it is the perfect word for it. Thanks to everyone who put this history story togeather with picture and sound memories. It has been a wonderful experience !!
Merry Christmas, Paul
