Frank Carter-Pit Crew

Post by Stu Schulman »

While attending the Phoenix Steel show I walked into the Desert Rose room and Frank Carter had a D-10 Zum upside down on a portable work bench,he had a bunch of tools out and I asked him what he was up to,He was re-rodding the guitar for Doug Jernigan to play later that night...Doug left his guitar at home,he said mostly the C neck about 6 pulls. It then hit me how similar Frank's masterful work was to a NASCAR pit mechanic, watching Frank is like watching a surgeon. After a while Doug sat at the guitar and road tested it after a few tweaks it was ready.Later that night Doug was playing at warp speed,A very cool thing to witness,Frank is a also a monster steel guitar player. :whoa:
Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... Mullen G2 S-10 3+5,Telonics 206 pickups,Telonics volume pedal.,Blanton SD -10,Emmons GS_10...Zirctone bar,Bill Groner Bar...any amp that isn't broken.Steel Seat.Com seats...Licking paint chips off of Chinese Toys since 1952.

I've been lucky to get to hang out with Frank and Jim Palenscar at Jim's Steel Guitar Store in North County San Diego. Not only can Frank work on steels, but he can also build top notch instruments with innovative brilliance! And the man can really play!!!!

Frank lives and breathes pedal steel. He builds them and he plays the fire out of them. He is a true student of the instrument as he disects songs and styles like no one else I know.

Oh did I mention what a great person he is or his sense of humor, or his big smile and that twinkle in his eye. Gosh how could I not mention Fran, his more than significant other. :D :D :D

Love you Frank

Frank did some quick tweeks on my MSA SD-12 Legend on Sat morning of the LA Steel Jam last year.
He wipped out his flashlight and a multi-tool thing and dove right under the hood!

My favorite Frank quote -"ah yeah I build a new steel but it could not be a production model there are too many little things that are different"

He hand made the bearings in the fingers on his changer that is now a little thing.

Great guy and I love to talk Steel Guitars with him too.
