The Calhoun Twins

Post by Tommy Auldridge »

I recently heard a couple of tunes on XM radio, one was "Walking Piece Of Heaven" and the other was "Think I'll Go Somewhere And Cry Myself To Sleep"
Both were by The Calhoun Twins. The steel guitar styling was really great. I can't imagine who the steel Player was. Can anyone answer this? Of course, I'd also buy this if it were availabale anywhere. Prbably not available would be my guess. Thanks

Calhoun Twins

The steel player on "walking piece of heaven" is Lloyd Green, I was also impressed with the steel on that song and asked Walter Stetner who it was and he said it's the one and only Lloyd. So thanks Walter.

The Calhoun twins - Jerry and Jack live in Florida and own Show Coaches of America tour bus company (the one that Lynn Owsley is affiliated with and the company that leases a bus to Willie Nelson, and many others). The bus company HQ is in Leesburg, Fl (about 25 miles east of where I live). They haven't toured for a long time and I don't know who did the steel (Owsley would know) but they were friends with Shot Jackson and many others in Nashville. They used to attend the ISGC in St Louis, too.

Jack,

When I was in Kevin Fowler's band, Kevin owned a metalic purple tour bus that was built by the Calhoun Bros. I really liked the feature of porthole windows in the bunks (these may be unique to their buses). On the road, you could lounge in bed and watch the world roll by... a very relaxing way to pass the travel time. 8)

Keep on pickin'!

Very good Jack. They were great country singers. Stevie Smith from Canada occasionaly played for them. I just heard them on XM Sattelite radio. Real country singers.

They can customize a bus in 10 days to two weeks to a customer's spec's. The windows on that bus are not standard - they were probably configured for the original owner's (or leasee's) specs. I've been over to the "Ranch" (as they call it) which is a big complex that has their corporate offices, the shop section where they customize buses, a building where they house guests, Jerry's house and their own flight line for their Lear Jet.

Lynn Owsley stays there when he's in Florida and I've been over there and jammed with Owsley and Jack.

For a "mil" or so, they will customize a tour bus for you

Jerry & Jack Calhoun

Post by Bill Stafford »

The Calhoun Twins dropped in on our Deep South Steel Show on Feb 21 here in Gulfport, Ms. and brought with them Donna Darlene(Jackson) and Scotty and Mary Scott. We immediately had an elictrified band stand and it was felt in our audience. A great pair of musical entertainers who amazed and pleased everyone here. Especially me. A most enjoyable show was had by all. Jery and Jack are world class performers. And when Donna Darlene joined them on our stage, nothing could have been better.

I recently had the pleasure to speak with Mr. Curtis Andrews, President of Ready Records in Kissimmee, FL. He sent me 2 Calhoun Twins CDs: "Easy Come, Easy Go" and "Starting New Memories," which has Lloyd Green on "Walking Piece of Heaven." These boys really do sound like Marty Robbins.

Turns out Mr. Andrews - and the Twins - are major pedal steel fans. I sent him a link to the Steel Guitar Forum.

I know Jerry has been to the ISGC, and probably Jack has also. They are big steel guitar fans. They have been to the weekly Tuesday afternoon jam show at Catfish Johnny's in Lake Panasoffkee (I'm in the staff band there) and to our Florida Steel Guitar Club jams (at Catfish Johnnny's). We had a Steel Guitar Hall of Fame fundraising show about 4 years ago, at Catfish Johnny's and they were on the show.
