Dave's still around and I remember seeing him demoing that thing at the NAMM show just a few years ago. Apparently he's recently lost a couple fingers on his right hand but he still gets around on it. His later versions have a bass on the bottom neck.

BTW that style of right hand tapping where the hand approached the neck in line with strings instead of from the side like Stanley Jordan,rockers and Stick players do,was originally pioneered by Merle Travis and later perfected by Jimmy Webster in the early 50s. Webster even wrote a method book called "The Touch System"
